ive gotten my first oil change since i had bought my car used. I put mobile 1 syn. into it but i wasnt sure if the previous owner used synthetic or regular? Just wondering if it would be a problem or not in the long run with switching to synthetic. btw my car has 61000 miles.

No you should be fine. If you switch to synthetic with high miles (maybe 80,000?) it could be a problem.

i was thinking of puting synthetic oil in my celi it has 81k why would it be a prob confused

it's not going to be a real problem unless, all your seals in your engine is still good.

Oil weight, or viscosity, refers to how thick or thin the oil is, or measure of the "flowability" of an oil. I believe synthetic oil is very thin, therefore if your car has a lot of mileage of it chances are your seals would be more worn out than a car with lesser miles. Meaning the synthetic oil can seep out more easily than a conventional non-synthetic oil which is more thicker. If you want you can put the synthetic oil in your engine and make sure you measure it daily if you notice any loss of oil, you could either replace your seals, or go with like a 50/50 synthetic oil mix with the regular.

5W-30 synthetic oil has the same viscosity as 5W-30 regular oil.

Sorry to bump a dead thread, but I'm extremely curious.

I have 2000GT with 84,000 miles on it. Someone told me I should be using synthetic oil and my car will idle and drive better if I do, but with such high mileage I'm concerned about leaks. I bought the car used at 68,000 miles and I don't know whether he used synthetic or how often he changed the oil. Since I've owned it it's gotten a regular oil change every 2500 to 3500 miles.

Should I just stick with regular oil, or would it be better to switch to synthetic? Will it help my idle at all to switch over?

Sorry, I don't know much about this stuff.

Well, obviously there are several opinions on this. I've switched myself on 2 high-mileage vehicles (one V-6 SUV, and one 4 cyl DOHC), and never had problems. Besides, if you did switch, and a gasket went, would you be able to prove it was caused by changing to synthetic? I don't think so. It could well fail without the switch just as easily. I dunno, I haven't looked for info; maybe you could do a search.

You MUST use synthetic oil, regular oil you can use in low rpm engines, but not in celi. Leaks in almoust new engine which has 80000 milage? grin grin grin Tou american boys don't know what is old engine if you say that it is old. I have BMW 525 1991 and it has 250000km and I use only synthetic and no leakage. If you have leakage with synthetic oil, you will have it with regular also.

synthetic oil mix with regular? eek eek no way, never mix synthetic with regular.

Almost everything that is suposed to be different about synthetic is a misconception. Do the research, its the same as regular oil, you can mix, match, switch & do whatever with no effect. Synthetic is just a little better at handling upper & lower temperature variances and is a little more resistant to break down. That's all.

& No sythetic doesn't prevent your engine from breaking in properly.

I changed to synthetic and my car is sitting at 108,000 right before the oil change. But before changing the engine got detailed at a local shop so now if any oil shows that it's leaking I can tell what seals are pretty bad and get them replaced before my engine dies.

Have you guys tried a used oil analysis?
I have been using amsoil synthetic, but
the guys at blackstone labs, who do
thousands of uoa's tell me to use
the cheapest oil I can find, and recomend
walmart oil, and to have it changed every
6months. That synthetic oil may last longer,
but if you buy the cheap oil and change every 6
months or 5000 miles, it protects the engine
just as well as synthetic.
Now if your doing extended oil drains, thats
a different story.
I change my oil onces a year, using amsoil series 2000 0-30wt
with k&n oil filter, and my use oil analysis comes back
with flying colors, except in the silcon range, with is ok.
That means sand, which equals k&n intake filter. I love having
an intake, but they really don't filter as well as a paper or oem
filters!
You guys should check out bob the used oil guy website. Everyone compares
their uoa's there. It seems that oil is oil, if just change it often, if not
then get the synthetics.

Because synthetic can last a little longer, the maker can afford to put less additives in the oil to help prolong its life, and put more actual oil into the product. Less additives also leads to less potential deposits.

For the average person, the best oil for your car is oil put in every 3000 miles. Depending on how much you push/race/abuse your car, though, you may want to consider an oil that will stand up to what you can dish out.

If I ever find the time to autocross regularly, I'll probably consider switching to synthetic.

I know that once you switch to synthetic, you should not switch back. Stay with regular or swith permenently to synthetic. If you do decide to go a lot of miles on synthetic though, I would recomend still changing your filter every 3000. This is what I have been told, but not sure how much oil loss you get on the celi when you take just the filter off and try and change it, been a long time since my last oil change (just took it out of storage).
