ok i just put redline 5w-30 today in my car, and honestly no noticable differences. but wut i really noticed is that it takes longer to start the car. it turns over more than before the engine turns on.
is this cz i just put synthetic in, or is this how synthetics make engines work, or is the engine oil too thin?
my car has 19,000miles

I thought it improves how smooth it shifts?

5w-30 is for your engine not your transmission
The transmission uses MT 90

Hmmm, I run with Mobil-1 synthetic, and never noticed that it took longer to start up. But it might have, and I just didn't notice.

even if it's only a couple of hp on the top end, you'd have to dyno to know. too many variables on the street. not sure if my butt is sensitive enough to feel 2 hp, but everybody's different.

I get my kicks on EC.

I'd be more concerned with battery health than what oil I used...especially since you probably used 5w-30 before.

He'd have to do 3 before dynos, 3 after dynos, and average the results, in order to really take any guesses about performance. I wouldn't be surprised if there was 2 extra HP between the worst regular oil on earth (after 15K on it) and a synthetic...but oil is for lubricating and keeping your engine healthy, not making it go faster. spineyes

Hell I use ticker oil (10w-30) and don't have that problem, check your battery.

save the laughter for urself steven. a lot of ppl told me that the idle is better with synthetic.
no i wasnt expecting hp from the oil, but i was abit hoping my valve ticking would be lower (wishing).
the only reason i switched to redline is cz i got it at a good deal, its one of the best oils out there, i wanted synthetic so i dont change the oil every 3000 miles, and i wanted to take as good care of the engine as possible.

i also have redline mt90, you can kinda tell the shifts get smoother, but not much of a noticable thing.

Check out Royal Purple Oil. I'm not sure if they make 5w-30 or not though. I have seen dyno differences on Corvettes, and the stuff actually did work like they claim (and before everyone asks for proof, I don't have it. It wasn't my dyno, I was just watching). There wasn't a massive increase, but it did go up.

thats something good to hear, but hp wasnt wut i was looking from the oil.
but thats good info, i bet it wouldnt help the celica much though. 4cyl 1.8L doesnt really have that much of a potential.

have you been using synthetic the whole time? I think youre supposed to use synthetic throughout the whole life of the engine or it won't prolong the life of the engine. it is nice to have it idle smoothly though. wave

Royal purple does make 5w-30. I don't think it does make any difference with power wise. Better engine oil, good TLC for your engine and good engine last longer.

Yeah, I realized that Royal Purple does make 5w-30 after I actually took a good look at their site smile. Maybe I will try it out. Do a few dynos before and after. I wouldn't expect much change from a 4 cylinder though, but it would be interesting to know. So maybe...

^^ya just saw that.

but the redline is proven and tested that even after 18,000 miles, the oil still has life (it hasnt broken down completely)
just to play it safe and keep the engine healthier, im gonna change it every 10,000 miles

btw, that long turning over problem is gone, i guess the engine got used to it.

and no, you cant put synthetic oil in a celica engine from day 1. it has to first run on regular oil for atleast 3000 miles so the engine breaks in right.

I just switched to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic, and i think the car sounds a tiny bit quieter, but it could be just cause i'm looking for a difference.

I'm still going to change my oil every 3,000 because i drive it harder then your average joe, and i'm sure cleaner oil may help my car last a little longer.

I would never go 15,000 miles! thumbsdown
