Ok so where to start. I was being stupid and ended revving my engine to 8500rpm maybe a little more I'm not sure. I dont really know if that is really bad, it stayed there for less then a second than dropped. Anyway ever since then (I think it from then) I hear a faint rattling, knocking noise. I would be really worried about it but some reason it goes away then comes back. I really don't know what makes it come back or when exactly I got this problem. I took it to Toyota and had a guy listen to it but he couldn't look at it in depth and he said that he didn't know what it was. Im taking it to a shop this Saturday to see whats up, I'm thinking of having them change my tensure and belt while they are at it, still not sure if I want to do or not but hey if its already in the shop then why not. The noise is coming from the passenger side in the engine bay, I don't think its the tensure or it might not even be anything internal because the noise is constant while revving, well at least thats how it sounds to me... I tried to get a sound clip but I cant send it to my computer via my phone, where its stored. I'm hoping that its something outside the engine rattling that I haven't seen yet like a loose bolt, or some under plastics or something thats a $5 fix. Anyway sorry for the long post but its late and Im going to if its something serious. Any ideas on what it might be and yes I know from the info I gave its really hard to try to find the problem but any ideas where I can look before it goes into the shop? Oh and the sound is faint, it can barely be heard while inside the car and with the hood open its noticeable but not nearly as bad as a bad tensure.

I had a friend check it out. He said that it sounds like plastic rattleing, not meatle on meatle. But he said it could also be a lifter that going bad. Anyone else having problems with a lifter? or is there a common rattling sound that comes from the engene bay? Like I said above it either stops making noise completely or it gets really quiet. Thanks

dude how did you get it reving that high in the first place, did you downshift and land on that RPM? it could be plastic, but it also could be ur engine. if you misshifted, you might have read 8500rpm but it couldve gone higher than that. ur best bet is to lift up the car and look for loose plastics, put a screwdriver on the engine, and ur ear in the end and listen to it and see where teh noise is really coming from. good luck and let us know

this was on neutral? r you sure you were at 8500rpm or higher and not lower? i tell you wuts ur problem, after doing that, ur listening to the engine bay too closely and every odd noises are making you freak out. i know cz thats how i am also sometimes. just take it somewhere to be safe and have em check out, but i think its an engine plastic or something just rattling, or even the belt noise, you never know. i just find toyota engine bay is always noisier than it should really be

Yeah this is what Im thinking too My friend said he thinks its just plastic but I dont know. Im taking it in to do the belt and tensioner (spelling?) so I will have them look into the noise as well. It might be a belt noise, but Im not sure, It is comming from around that area...

The other night I got a video of the sound so you all could see and hear what I am talking about. I cant put on here becuase its a little big, 5.45 mb. Does anyone one know where I can host it from?
Notes on the noise.
1) There has been no notiable difference in the performance of the car 2) The noise only starts after the car has warmed up for a bit. 3) THe noise seems to be comming from under the valve cover where the timeing chain is. 4) Lift and everything works fine. 5) I notice the noise after I went up to or over 8500 in neutral and now its with me where ever I go.
I took it to Toyota and they wanted $250 to check out the noise. Im going to check my lift bolts anyway tomorrow so I was going to check inside the valve cover to see whats up.
I am going to take it to another mechanic but with school and work I dont have the time right now.
Thanks

Have you tried spraying some belt dressing on your belts to see if it goes away? You may want to try that, then we could rule out belts or belt tensioner if it continues after you spray them down.
