yeah but, you can store the route you are using in the head unit's cache memory that way you can remove the map disc and still have use of your GPS and the other disc based functions at the same time

Does the nav system use GPS to show your location and just use DVD to load the maps?

yeah the DVD rom is the maps and the GPS shows location

Did you install it yourself? If not, how much was the install? Where did you put the "brain" (hide away box)? If you put it under the passenger seat, did you drilled the floor?

I had it installed, since my stock system came with the amplified JBL system that had to be bypassed it was just easier to let the shop deal with it. the "brain" was hidden away under the dash, all in all the install was about $150 and that included the extra labor of having to bypass and rewire the stock system.
