ive posted this in a few other forums, but nobody can tell me what to do...i am going to get a valentine1 at some point, but not before i figure out how i can mount it. i dont want it sticking to my windshield...i found this picture a long time ago and it would be absolutely PERFECT...if i could just find out whose car it is or how they mounted it...it's hanging from the rearview mirror, hard wired into the dome light, i think...here's the pic

Radar detectors are not illegal in california. If you read the vehicular code at the DMV website you will see that only devices meant to directly affect radars in any way are illegal. This means radar jammers to quote the vehicular code. If you still aren't convinced just call your local police station or CHP office and ask.

if it were behind the mirror i believe its perfectly legal. but i think the way the picture looks, it hangs lower than the mirror, from that point on, it is considered an "obstruction of view" -- making it illegal.

The cop would have to be a real prick to give you a ticket for obstruction of view with that radar detector there. I've had mine in the middle of my windshield down near the dash for over 2 years and never had a problem..
If you're really that worried about it, put it next to the rear view mirror..i don't see how they can say thats obstruction of view because its up high enough that the tinted strip across the front would be infront of it, and you see through the tined strip when you're driving..

I would want one of these myself. I think I will spend a little time in my shop this weekend and figure out how to make one - should not be difficult with the right tools and materials. Will not use Carbon Fiber, but was thinking of plastic/aluminium. OK, I'll get back to you with my results...

if you make it id reccommend trying to incorporate a quick-release button (if your getting pulled over, pop it off and throw it in the center console ;-)) cop wont say nothing if he cant see it. man that looks nice.

Any other recommendations, please let me know. I have access to a full metal and wood shop, with lathes, CNC milling machine etc etc, so...

it looks like they may have used the visor clip to attach it to the mount...i dont know if there is any other type of hanging device, unless they altered the suction mount somehow...that might be the biggest problem. hopefully we (you) can figure something out if you have any problems, bring it up so we can all brainstorm about it, thanks for your experimentation...i know we will all appreciate it.

i have been searching on-line for awhile now, and the closest thing i have found is in the picture below...looks like they just got some metal, bent it, and screwed it directly into the rearview mirror...not as clean looking as the first, but still does the job...it puts it above the mirror though, but i imagine it would work the same putting it below...any comments?

i was thinkin about this once and thought best and cleanest way to do this is part out the radar detector and place the front sensor somewhere inteh front of the car and the rear sensor at the back of the car, and have the screen and lights and the buzzer custom done in the ashtray.
as of you guys wanting it on the top of the windshield, why dont you make a bracket and screw it on the back of the detector. glue the bracket on the windshield with the same glue used to hold the rearview mirror. if you dont want the top of the windshield to look too messy, then tint the top or put a sticker

All right, I am working on the radar detector mount, actually found some parts today at Good Guys that can easily be modified to fit on the rearview mirror. I will spend Sunday finishing it up, mount it, take pictures and post it for you guys... I believe it will be very clean looking and nice.
Today I got my gauge and LED kit from RJ autoworks, so I have spent the day changing LEDs and "fine-tuned" the looks. Decided to put in a blue LED instead of a lamp for the headlight indicator, and green LEDs for the turn signals. I might even put in blue LEDs for the a/c control and lighter. I'll post a picture later. What I don't like about the kit is when I use red LED for the rev gauge, there is a color transition from the blue LED to the redline (it looks purple/lavender), not a sharp distinction between blue and red. And the area around the needle on the rev gauge has the same purplish/pinkish color. Hard to describe without a picture, but take a look on the posting by Puppyhunber: Question for those who have changed LEDs on their gauges" and you can get an idea of what I refer to.
Have also been fine-tuning the blue color of the LED's on my Pioneer CD/Radio/Satellite receiver, don't like the blue colors/lights in my car to be different... (I am picky).
Regarding mounting of radar dectector, I have an Escort Passport 8500 X50 Radar/Lidar detector, and it must be mounted such that the antenna (on the detector) can pick up radar/laser signals from the rear, so for me it must hang a little below the rearview mirror so it can have unobstructed "view" towards the rear.
I am also in the process of mounting a grounding kit. I am somewhat sceptical about the performance gains (whp). Since this is not an expensive mod I will give it a try. Since I have a fairly good stereo system w/woofer, it should be able to get a little boost... (Go to Fry's electronic and check out their 1 gauge wire grounding kit for car stereos with BIG subs ... supposed to improve the performance of the speakers and amplifiers). And I agree that better grounding can at least be beneficial for all the electronics onboard.
