Heres the story since many of you were curious. Keep in mind, it was my first time to run at a track..

ON THE WAY TO THE TRACK:
A manual single turbo supra and I went up to the track together, and it was the most badass experience ever. We were cruisin along and I had my friend video tape. We got to see the supra race a new 05' GT mustang. They raced from about 70 to 130 mph. The supra won by about a car length (the supra had to switch lanes several times due to traffic, the gt had his own lane with no cars ahead of him). Then I get a phone call a little later and he tells me "Hey what does it look like behind you?" And I look in my rear view mirror and theres a turbo audi and a 3000gt speeding up fast. The 3000gt speeds up to the supra which was in front of me and and gets even with him. They both downshift at about the same time, and the supra stomps his ass. After that the two cars sped away. Meanwhile, my friend and I were kinda bored of just cruisin with a Turbo 94' Supra, so my friend tells me " Hey go up to him dude I want you to race him!" rolleyes cool . So im like why not? So I get even with him and honk three times. We both downshift at the same time and I was even with him for about 1/8 of a second and then we hear the turbo kick in...and within a matter of seconds he is 5 car lengths ahead of me rice .
AT THE TRACK:
I watched the supra run 4 times. His tires kept slippin so hes getting new ones. His best time was a 13.5 in the 1/4.
Me in my Auto 2002 GTS Celica ran twice and then stopped cause it was useless to do it again cry . My car is slooooowwww.
My first run:
I get staged and see the lights go down (3 yellows then a green). I, being my first time, get a bad launch. I hesitated, let go of the brake at the 3rd yellow light and was afraid that I would get a red light, so by the time it turned green I hadnt had my foot on the gas yet. Then after .8 seconds of delay, I gun it rolleyes . I had it in auto mode and only got to about 5,000 rpms in 3rd gear by the time I was through. Now heres the sad part...I had to race a professional drag 70s mustang. My digital camera wont focus good enough to take a pic of the timeslip so ill type it:
R/T .767
60' 2.896
330 7.665
1/8 11.509
MPH 65.01
1000 14.705
1/4 17.425
MPH 82.01
cry cry cry
My second run:
I had a decent launch, delaying less time. This time i put it in Manual mode. For a second, right before lift, my tires spun for a second. Heres the timeslip:
R/T .516
60' 2.860
330 7.655
1/8 11.522
MPH 64.45
1000 14.765
1/4 17.549
MPH 80.39

Thats it!

at least you dont have a rev limiter. But that wont really do much. A 2001 gts got a 17.2 which is only .2 seconds faster then mine yourock

40 to 50 degree weather? lol we don't get that even in winter spineyes (it does occasionally get colder, but it's hardly ever below 50).

and you know good and well i meant stock autos, dumbass. i dont see very many stock gts autos (also without weight savings) running 16s.

geezum, the have an auto in the freakin nhra that runs 10s or 11s or whatever (forget the exact times..but its competetive in it's class) stop trying to hump my leg all day long, ct tongue grin

i think he means he stalled in his decision making, giving him a slow reaction time. i can guarantee that if he physically stalled his car his reaction time would be a LOT worse (think seconds, not tenths of a second)

I know but I was just pointing out that it was a weird thing to say and pretty stupid if you sit on the line trying to figure out what your gonna do. He says he had a 4 second r/t yet it shows 1.2 r/t unless I am missing something.
How much does the action package weight? I have noticed around a 4/10th second slower times with people who have the a/p vs. stock bodykit.

another thing to consider is that they have a short ram. think about this. SRIs have been dynoed to lose power below 4K rpm...up to 9whp. an auto is not a manual in that it can rise above the rpm and dump it. the auto has to climb though the shit rpm till it gets to lift where the sri does it's thing. with all the heat and bogging a SRI has...it's not good on a high revving engine.

it's not only a weight difference (which does indeed play a role..but that's not the end of it).

the lower a car is, the more downforce it produces. whether you do this by lowering springs or by a body kit it doesnt matter. the trd kit slightly lowers the car (even without springs) so this creates more downforce which is great for control on the road, but it slows you down when your just trying to go in a straight line.

the other factor to keep in mind is the trd spoiler on the action packages. it creates both downforce AND drag..both of which slow down our cars at the drag strip.

the actin pakage isn't anything major. it's only a little heavier, a little lower, and creates only a little more drag..but they add up to like you say..a loss of a few tenths of a second

Bottom line is thats whats expected, sure with a couple bolt-ons, minor weight reduction in cold weather and a great run, its possible to run mid 16s or maybe even low 16s. But completely stock on an average run, low 17s is what is expected, high 16s on a very good run.

Man, I don't know if you're shifting properly in M-mode. Your times were lower just letting the tranny work on it's own.

How high are you revving the engine before you shift? You should at least be in the high 16's shifting the car manually. press the Upshift button just before you reach your fuel cut (about 7800 RPM, higher depending on the model year/ecu you have).

There's about a 1/2 second delay from when you press a button, to when the tranny actually shifts, so take that into account, and compensate for it by hitting the button 1/2 sec before you reach your targeted shift point.

Although you can start out in 2nd gear, it's best on the auto GTS to start in 1st gear. Do a brakestand (step on the brake, and hold your revs at around 2K prior to launch)

1st gear revs through pretty quick, so, if you're unsure on your timing, it's better to shift out of lift to 2nd a little sooner (about 7K rpm) or leave it in D through 1st gear, when the tranny shifts to 2nd, you can flip the lever to M-mode, and control the gears manually from there. Just be sure you have the gas floored through 1st, or lift may not engage in that gear.

LIft is there for a reason, use it! If you were to milk the powerband for all it's worth, you'd definitely get better times.

Of course, you could just stick to autocross, and with some practice you would own everybody thumbsup

rick...next time...do this..

get a CAI (TPR or AEM)
get the spare out
RAISE your PSI..lowering psi is more for manuals cause they tend to spin...an auto can't do that.
get your gas tank as low as possible 3-4 bars.
shift at 7800 (marco's idea)
and for godsakes...don't listen to caleb... rofl

think about this...
-modded auto GTs get into the mid 16s no problem.
-caligts and a few othrs have raced their auto gts' with a auto GT from a stop and won by a lot.

as for autocross i only know jae who HAD a auto gts and used it for auto-x...according to him he fared well. only ron, steven, or kim can confirm this.

Good advice, but I wont be getting a cold air intake. As far as everything else goes, we must consider that mine is a 2002 with a rev limiter. I had my spare in, as well as a Few jackets in the trunk because it was freezin.

I have a 2000 auto GTS and the rev limiter is in the 8000 range cause I can floor my car without using sportshift and it wont shift til it gets to 7900-8000.

2002 auto is 7800, that's the case.

That's cool man, on the 2002, in D it'll sometimes drop out of lift prematurely, in other words, it's because the tranny shifts out of it. That's why I usually race it in M, since the shift points in D seem to be attuned for fuel economy. sometimes it will hold lift longer, but it depends on the driving situation (IE. when passing it'll hold lift, when merging it wont.)

That's why I said what I did, and also why I'm considering the ECU swap ^_^

why would tyou bump up your tires pressure even higher to launch the car. the lover psi you have the better. i run my car on 23 psi at the track and get a 14.4 but mine is also a 6 speed. DO NOT PUT MORE AIR IN YOUR TIRES
