And here a view of the radar detector with the mount on it. Parts roughly $20, time/labor about 1 hr if you don't screw up as I did. I will post a write up of what you need etc. I just want to buy stock in the company that makes this part LOL...

I really like the Escort 8500 X50. It is able to detect several radar bands, POP radar and laser. For radar it will detect 360, for laser/lidar it will detect front and rear or less than 360 . The Valentine will give you what direction the radar/laser is coming from, the Passport will not. The Escort costs around $300, so it is not a cheap one, and the one with blue display is more expensive. I found the best price on eBay. I can refer you to the seller if interested - I paid less then $300 shipping included. However, I have already made up for that cost - have been going a little fast at times and just in time discovered the CHP coming around the turn and another time he was on the other side of the hill. In both cases I would have been given a pricey ticket if I was caught. Two times it has detected laser/lidar. Go to http://www.escortradar.com/x50.htm and download the manual to learn more. I myself don't like the look of the Valentine, but it is rated among the best side by side with the Escort in several reviews. (Do a web search for radar detectors).

All in all, I am VERY satisfied with the Escort 8500 x50, and it has become a part of the interior in my car. I almost feel "naked" without it...

Looks good, but is that a piece of a speaker mount? Just curious.

any clue on how to adapt that for a v1? if not, maybe after the "how-to" is posted, we can figure out a way to adapt it. looks awesome, though...good job. excellent.

To be honest, I don't know how the Cobra will do. As long as it can handle all bands (x, K, Ka) as well as POP, Laser/Lidar and is not only limited to detect signals coming from somewhere in front of you, you might be OK. Maybe somebody more experienced on this forum can give you better advice.

in my opinion, the v1 is the best on the market..gives you 360 protection for all mediums of detection, directional arrows, and a bogey counter. go to http://www.valentine1.com/ for more information. costly at $400 new, but well worth it in my book. my brother-in-law has one, and he wouldnt trade it for the world. saved him thousands of $$ on tickets so far. i can't wait to get one!!

that's a nice mount. I'm also designing my own mount. however, I haven't found a shop that could cut it for me. it will be made out of 6061 T-6 aluminum.

awesome...did you see that picture that i posted on the other thread? if not, here is a smaller version. maybe your mount might look something like it. it just screws into the visor mount on the v1. good luck with it.

^ radar detectors aren't illegal. Only in virginia, D.C. and some other places.

Also, i heard that by the time your detector detects LASER/LIDAR, it's too late... i read it on a speeding safe website thing. smirk

coz laser uses a very narrow band. all the trooper needs to do is point and click and it will give them a pin point accurary of your speed. by the time your radar alerts you, the trooper already got your speed. tongue this is regardless of whatever detector you have (passport, v1, cobra), unless you have a laser jammer.

thats why you hope that he tries to clock someone else before you so the detector picks it up
