Ok, I just recently learned what WHP means And I want to know is that how the HP is measured when you buy a car, ie the 180 hp that the GTS comes stock with. So if I were to add a TRD exhaust with a 6 whp gain (correct me if I am wrong on that number) would that only increase me to 186 or are they compleatly different, or is 6 a big difference. Please help or let me know if just confused you, either way. Thanks, Alex

The manufactuers measure the HP at the crank which is 180 for the GTS. But due to drivetrain loss, about 15-20% (not sure), the GTS only has about 145 WHP. From some of the numbers I've seen, that may be kind of a high guess. I've seen stock GTS pull in the 150's, even 160's. So I think power loss for a manual tranny is about 10-15%, but for the automatics it's more like at least 15%.

So then (tries to remember how to do this) 20% of 180 is 36hp loss, 180 minus 36 is 144 whp. Ok now for the hard part, so to find our hp gain at the crank you take 6 divided by 20% and get 30. Is this correct, exhaust causing a car to jump from 180 to 210 seems like alot, is that correct tough, please correct me.

~Alex Math error. If you assume 20% drivetrain loss, 6 whp gain = 7.5 hp gain at flywheel.

When the exhaust claims to gain whatever amount of HP, its usually in WHP so the TRD would give you 6 WHP gains if thats what they claim. Dynos don't measure at the crank, they measure at the wheel.

if your math is correct, is TRD lieing when they say their exhaust "generates a 10-14 hp gain"

And to get to that page, you have to go through the menus and select a Celica, so its not meant for some other car. But they didn't give any details either. Maybe thats when paired with a CAI or SRI, I dunno. If the 12 hp is for real, it increases the liklihood I'll get one!

The 12 hp gain is at a specific rpm, i.e. at lift on a GTS.

Actually of this website he gained 15 whp with a intake and exhaust so 12 whp is not too far of a stretch for the exhaust I guess http://users.ameritech.net/trdcelica/engine.htm

The 12 hp gain is at a specific rpm, i.e. at lift on a GTS. werd... the GTS 6-speed usually dynos between 155-160whp...that means a drivetrain loss at 12-14% it's the autos that lose around 20%.

Remember that horsepower is, in essence, a made up number, that is calculated based on torque. HP is torque(measured by a dyno)*Revs(at any rev point)/5200:
torque*rev ---------- 5200
When an exhaust claims power, it's peak power. It shifts the torque curve, thus the car makes more torque in the higher end, adding to the multiplication side. Even a small gain in torque can make a large gain in hp. To gain more power out of a car, you adjust the torque curve, hence why VW's have good low range torque, but shit for horsepower (at least the low end engines).

TRD has an Off-Road cat back system that sports 18-25hp gain. I'm assuming it flows pretty good due to the fact is cannot be sold or installed on a vehicle in Cali.

The Kazuma is what you're referring to. It's a full straight-pipe, no resonators, silencers, or mufflers. Runs at 115 decibles.
