I like to think I am reasonably intelligent, but how do you remove the gearshift knob? Unscrew it counterclockwise?

And what is up with the leather boot? It feels like it is attached to the knob in some way. Is there something holding it close to the knob??

Yep,give it a few turns counter clockwise, it will spin off. The shift boot is attached to the plastic piece over it only, it is supported close to the knob by a plastic piece on the shifter assembly

hey buddy, yea all you do is unscrew it. the boot is not attached, the chrome on the bottom of the knob is attached to the boot. now a word of adivce, to get the new knob to fit better, fallow the instructions to remove the plastic around the boot to get the boot off. then remove that little white clip on the rod itself. this allows you to move the knob and boot down to fit better. also makes it look shorter thumbsup here is mine so you can see. if you ahve quesiotns feel free to pm me thumbsup

You have to give it some force when untwisting. It seems to be stuck there, but after the first twist, the rest will be smooth.

Question about the stock boot: Is it actually leather (on a GT) or is it vinyl?

"The shift boot (vinyl or leather) is supported close to the knob by a plastic piece on the shifter assembly."

How do you remove the little plastic piece that keeps the boot close to the knob?

1. After unscrewing the knob, does the plastic piece simply slip off?
2. The chrome plastic ring--it is attached to the boot, right?
3. Does the chrome plastic ring interfere with the removal of the "plastic piece" that keeps the boot close to the knob?

bloda01:
1. The white plastic piece does just slip off after the knob and boot are removed.
2. The chrome plastic piece is attached to the boot, but can be removed by turning the boot inside out and snipping a zip tie, or untwisting a wire wrapped around the inside of the boot.
3. The chrome plastic piece won't interfere with the plastic piece.

To remove the boot on a 7th gen Celica, just squeeze the ring around the base of the boot and it comes up through the console.

Take a look at this page, there is an install manual for our shifters which could help you out, just scroll down the page a bit and you'll see the link:

I hope this helps,
