Thinking about making a set of carbon fiber sun visors.
Is there a place that sells 1/8" or 1/16" thick carbon fiber? Then I could just cut out the shape needed!?
The original hardware can be used, just heat the wire and slide them out, then cut a slot with a bandsaw for the visors, to fit the hinges and secure with small bolts! I made a template by setting a visor in a copy machine, then cutting a paper template!

I am looking at a thickness of .040" That's about the thickness as a tongue depressor. The thicker, the more it costs. What do you guys think about a thin visor? It will be structurally sound! http://www.robotcombat.com/marketplace_carbonfiber.html11X 16 sheet is $63 and will do both sides

I'm looking at having them cut out at the composite shop and then attach the hardware on a single composite panel. It will be a single blade design like an aircraft visor, but not tinted.

yea carbon fiber is going way up. simon has been telling me that a concept airplane is buying up all of the carbon fiber from all companies. therefore all prices are going up, and stocks are getting very limmited, esp c/f hoods. by mid summer it shoudl be way up

OK I talked to the Goddess of Carbon Fiber! She is the Chief Inspector at T-Aerospace. She said there are no shortages to her knowledge. (Mabey cause she has it all?)
She is milling me some honeycomb for the inner ply of the visors. This will be of aerospace quality construction. I also need to build some molds for the visors.
I have no intent in deviating from the original shape of the visors. The taper in length of the visors is due to the curvature of the roof, and any longer the mirror would be struck when the blinds are swung. The only the omission will be the mirror. (I do not need to be reminded how ugly I am every time the sun comes out, it would make me nocturnal for sure!)
They have rooms made just for carbon fiber builds. After hours we will build some and perform destructive testing on them. I want to see first hand how they will hold up under normal wear and tear. (I know that road rage has impact on interior components as well)
I will post pics so all can behold the beauty of the Goddess of Carbon Fiber and learn with me through the processes.
I am doing as much homework as possible and construction will begin during the spring/summer summer semesters (we both go to college)

you won't have any problems from honeycombs. i work on airplanes and use them all the time. you can jump up and down on them all day and they won't break. its really light weight too. that's a good idea. wish i would have thought of it.
