do any of you know the benefits with premium unleaded petrol over normal unleaded? What are some benefits?

yeah better combustion and there four performance and also better mileage. hope that helps , i always but primo but it is costly, toyta recomends always useing primo for the celica.

"Higher octane is a waste of money and in some cases actually will lower your power output a bit.

The only exceptions for when you could need it are if you have a lot of combustion deposits causing detonation, slightly higher octane can help prevent detonation which is very stressfull on your engine, FI or higher than stock compression ratio. Now this pertains to running stock timing of course. "

But basically if you use something like shell v-power it can clean out your injectors and if you have a 7th gen gts you should be using 91 is it? but otherwise you are not getting anything else out of it.

This talks about using toluene and higher octane so it may or may not be worth reading for you

i always just use regular... dad says there's not that big of a difference between regular and plus... and premium costs waaaaay too much... so he says use regular... and i listen.. haha

You drive a GTS and it requires premium. Do you ever notice a knocking sound? smile Put in 93 octane and you will notice a difference. Don't mess up your good car like that.

A GTS requires 91 octane or higher and there is a big difference between regulaer and premium and its called detonation. The number of the octane tells you the resistance to detonation and if you use regular on a GTS, you can say bye to your engine a lot sooner than you think thumbsup

nope... no knocking sounds... no problems at all

i dunno... i'm not driving it right now anyways... but really i can't afford anything higher than regular right now... actually i don't know if i'm going to be able to afford to even get it back on the road this year... frown

actually... every car i've owned requires premium and i've never used it... always used regular and never had any problems so i dunno...

You're going to be asking for problems later on if you keep using regular though...

10.0:1 comp. ratio on the GT is already pretty high but Toyota managed to engineer a way to use 87 on it...the GTS is 11.5:1 and there's no way around it you have to use regular.

I'm not sure on this but it's possible your car is sensing the knock and retarding the timing to prevent detonation. Regardless, a car is an investment and you should take care of it properly.

I'm with you, Celikitten.

From what I read in the magazines (Automobile, Motor Trend... etc) when the GTS first came out, they said that it required premium, but there was no difference between using that & regular & regular would be just as sufficient.

I also got from the Toyota Dealer that regular would be ok as well..

...I had my GT for 4yrs and had no problem with GT.
...My '04 GTS is only a mere 40hp better at 180hp. That's a lot less than other cars with much more powerful engines & they only require regular unleaded gasoline...

...so despite the gas door saying "premium fuel only", I've been stocking up on "regular" and I've had the car for roughly 8 months now & haven't noticed any performance issues or knocking or any engine issues...
...BUT... if gas prices do start to decline to a more reasonable level (or, premium's price is not 10 cents higher than regular), I'll consider the switch... but I'd really like to see what the difference is.

Oh, and BTW... premium will NOT help out in milage. That's been documented so many times where premium not only doesn't help in milage, it can sometimes hamper milage slightly.

Well SabreWulf ... your hp rating does not tell you what octane fuel to use ... it doesnt have anything got to do with that actually ... the higher octane is required because of the high compression ratio ... which might cause problems while running lower octane fuels which burns easily ...

No offense but
I think you can spare a dollar or 2 if the difference is 10 cents in price of premium and regular per fillup thumbsup

This is just my opinion so take it for what it's worth, but I wouldn't put all your faith in what the people at the dealership say!!!!

I think in 2 years I've put 91 in my car twice. I always use 93 b/c that's all they have at the station(s) I normally go to.

I agree with a few others on here about taking care of your car. If you can't afford to have it and take car of it properly then you need to get rid of it and find a more "financial friendly" mode of transportation. Either way it's your car so do what you want, but don't bitch when you may have problems later on.

At any rate, Clyde I hope some others in this thread have been able to shed some light on your original question. smile

actually... i can't... i'm unemployed with a baby on the way... and i can't go to work because i'm having complications... so yeah... i'm pinching pennies... and those extra 10 cents add up quick!!

(and yes i know that comment wasn't meant directly for me.. but i said in a previous post that i can't afford premium gas)
