Alright, let's switch from the mod opinion/questions to some discussion.

What kind of engine do YOU prefer? Think in terms of power, price, reliability, etc. I'll drop custom engines not in mass production.

Inline-4(T)
Flat 4(T)

Inline 5(T)
^^Think Volvo

Inline 6(TT, T)
V6(TT, T)

V8

V10

V12

For me, engine over 8 is too thirsty and too suspectible to performance damage, given their uses. 4's don't provide enough power for me. I'm gonna stick with my Toyota roots and choose the I-6. It's a medium that is very flexible and extremely successful in luxo-performance vehicles. I.E. Supra, 3 series, M3, IS300.

Now how bout you guys? Please state a reason, it'll make discussion better.

I6 for me.
Easier to fabricate the manifolds and route the IC pipe for turbo.
Hot on one side and cold on the other side.
BTW, you might wanna include W engine too.

yea you forgot Rotart, Flat 6, and W-16.

My personal favorite is the W-16tttt on the bugatti wink Bur ewalistically my fav is flat 6 in the GT2 thumbsup Always been a porsche fan thumbsup

Also forgot horizontally opposed 4 cylcinders, also called boxer engines, like those in Subarus. Also forgot the 15 degree-V6, or VR6 from VW. I like I-4 for its weight, but I think the idea of the rotary is probably my favorite. It seems so practical, yet there is only one production car in the USDM that has one. That and the L6 (linear) I like, but mostly because of the 2JZ-GTE and the one in the new 3-series.

Inline 4 (DOHC). I like the fuel mileage you get out of a small 4 in a light car like the Celica. Still has plenty of power for me, too.

What about the inline 3 Geo Metro engine? rofl

My favrote engine is the Wankel Rotery Engine. Or any Rotery Engine for that matter. They are so practical. The entire engine is creating power instead of a few pistons. It seems like it could be engineered to be almost perfect.

I also like the new hydrogen engines but I dont know much about them.

BTW, I couldn't edit the list, time was up.

Hybrid engines are cool. I'd recommend it to someone, but I wouldn't drive one.

I like the I-4, just because it's so simple and small. But for the power, V-6 is perfect...

Or V4 found in older european Fords and Saabs?

For me, I stick to the inline 4. Wish I could replace my 1zz-fe 1.8 with a 2.4 1zz-fe ...

Nope. Flat and horizontal are synonmyous terms. Same thing.

Flat is the same word for Boxer which is the same word for horizontally opposed. Horzontally opposed engines are flat in appearance. Subies and Porsches have boxer/flat/horizontally opposed engines. Make sense?

They are horizontally-opposed
That means the crankcase is in the middle.

What I asked was
"what car has flat engine that has all pistons push in the same direction"
That means crank case is on one side!

On my first post, I was not including any engine that isn't mass produced from the factory. Concept engines definetely don't count.

Hey don't knock the Slant Six smile

That was my first engine in my Dodge Dart. It's a real work horse, and some people did actually build them up for performance.

They had their share of flaws; seems like I was out there twice a month with my feeler gauges re-gaping the rocker arms and valves.

Slant Six is a Mopar engine, It's basically a straight six but the cylinders and spark plugs are tilted at about a 75 or 80 degree angle. If memory serves it was 225 cubic inch.

^^Serious? Go look in motortrend or C&D. In the end, there's a little small section on car stats. Under the type of engine, it says F4. F= flat. You've heard it now. thumbsup

Inline 4 and 6. Anything Inline and it has to be DOHC.

I thought you didn't know that the car has boxer engine.
Any way, I have heard "flat 4" so many times from both Subaru
and non-subaru owners. Also people call "flat-6" in Porsche all the times.

I've heard the term flat before. But never when referring to the engine of a Subaru. It's always horizontally opposed of boxer.
