I was told in another forum that breather mods on auto Celica actually make them slower. I have an auto. I'm not trying to make a race car out of it, but I wouldn't want a CAI to hurt my performance. Any input from other auto Celica owners who have performance mods???

I read that also dan - was wondering the same thing, but I talked to a fellow 2003 GT auto owner that has an AEM that he loves. I'll keep an eye on this thread also as I was hoping to buy a CAI this week.

I know, I knew this guy didn't know what he was talking about. I know that auto sucks in torque but more horses is more horses.

I have an 02 GT auto. I could immediately tell a difference from installing the intake. Mild performance gains, not too much. But the sound... that's what's up!! For a while I had the TRD exhaust only, and during high revs, the engine would overwhelm the sounds of the exhaust. Now, with the intake, the exhaust sound blends into the intake noise. Don't let your friend stray you from the cause. Any time you can open up breathing on a car, you'll be helping it. More air in, more air out =

I was looking at headers at one point, but I've been trying to keep my options open JUST in case I magically come into some $$. Then, c2power, watch out!!

Yup, it was in another thread I think. But DC supposedly had a problem with the design and they redesigned it to make it better. I'm not sure if I would trust it yet though.

My question is, why wouldn't performance upgrades work for an auto?
Obviously someone doesn't know what they are talking about since this thread was started to begin with.

i'm looking for some header, either hotshot or dc, but im doing some research because i heard that one of them (i think DC) robs HP. actually the DC works great for the 1ZZ..MWR has a dyno of it having gains throughout the power band... and it's been recorded that auto GT or GTS are indeed faster in the 1/4 with breather mods. people who say they don't either have experience with cheap products, those that are dyno proven to create low end loss, or are completely stupid...

you may want to look at hotshot as well...but since you are in cali then the carb'd DC will be better.

Those headers suck if you have a GTS. Most said it is better to port your header if you were to have a GTS.

That's why I asked, I knew he had to be wrong. But I'm no mechanic, and I just recently became interested in hooking up my Celi. I just wanted to here what other auto Celica owners thought. Maybe this guys stuff was cheap b/c he said he had an auto celi and it made it slower.

Because you can't launch an auto properly and must start moving between 2000rpms to 3000rpms (if you do a brake-stand) or from idle, if you just floor it. With breather mods, such as the CAI, you lose a lot of valuable low-end power. You need low-end on an auto if you want to move. With that lost, your car will move even slower off the line then stock, and you won't see any improvement until past 5000rpm. So that is why they say breather mods are bad for the autos (on our cars specifically & all other low-torque motors in general), because you lose power where you need it the most, which is down-low.
For manual car, losing down low doesn't really matter much, because you can launch above it, and after that its all high rpms.
