ok, so i've done about 4400 miles since i bought my car from toyota dealer 1month and a half ago. i think its time for an oil change. My question is, oil filter too? and dealer charges 30 bucks for an oil change, i dont think that includes filter cause i didnt ask. And your corner garage mechanic charges about 12 bucks for an oil change. Benefits of going with dealer? oh, and is the oil the dealers use good?

yup, oil filter too. just do it yourself. it's easy. Unless your very not handy at all..then ask a friend to show you how. It's cheaper in the long run.

oil and oil filter should be changed.

just did mine the other day...took about 10 minutes...it is a snap!

BEFORE DOING ANY OF THIS...MAKE SURE THAT THE OIL IS HOT! SO THAT IT WILL ALL DRAIN TO THE BATTOM OF THE PAN!

1. put your e brake on

2. use a floor jack to jack up the front of the car (use the flat plate right behind the front toe hook under the front of the car).

3. jack it up enough so that you can work freeley under the car while on your back.

4. if you still have the under body plastic covering the oil filter and oil pan (left of center) then move it so that you can get to them both.

5. put an oil catch on the ground, under the oil plug (located on the back of the pan) and remove the plug. make sure that you move your hand out of the way because the oil will be hot.

6. let the pan drain, then remove your oil filter (watch out for hot oil once again). when you have the oil filter off, turn it upside down in the oil catch to empty it.

7. *important* PUT YOUR OIL PLUG BACK IN!!! seen too many cars go capute by not doing this little step!

8. take your new filter out of the box and put some oil around the seal on the filter. then put you new filter on(make sure that you do not cross-thread it). thread it on and wait for the filter seal to contact the metal...then give it another 3/4 to 1 full turn (do not over tighten it!

9. pop the hood and take off the oil cap. refill with 4 1/2 quarts of oil and then replace cap.

10. lower car off of jack and start the engine. let the engine idle for a minute and check for leaks under the car. if no leaks, replace under car plastic and turn off car.

11. pull dipstick and check oil. if the oil is up to the second notch on the dipstick...you are all done. if it is low...add some oil.

12. shut hood and walk away! (dont forget to clean up your mess!)

Don't forget to use jackstands before going under the car. And also, the second notch from the tip of the dipstick indicates the max level of oil you should fill.

$12 bucks for an oil change, wonder what kind of oil they use.

Do it yourself. Cheap insuranse. Taks minutes. 4 qts and a new OEM Filter every 3k.

dealer does alright, i used to take it there. dont go to cornor places, they do shit work, i will never do that again, only reason i did was i couldnt aford to do it anyother way, so i had no choice...and that was a bigo tires... i'm going to do it myself this time...which is in a week or so. it is easy, i used to do it with my dad as a child, but now my step dad is an ass bout oil on the driveway. luckily, my sisters pos corolla leaks, so he has no exuse anymore

4.5qt for GTS..that's how much i put in mine..i bought the 15k miles Mobil 5w30..and it's great..i do all my oil change..cost 30bucks..but i do get the pleasure of doing it..like Zero said, it's very rewarding once you did it..
5qts of oil 25 bucks, 3-5bucks filter..that's 30..

probably a stupid question but where would you place the jack stands?, cause my dad has a floor jack and 2 jack stands and i want to get a little more involved with my car.

behind each tire thats a place to put them... also when your filling up your car with oil fill you flitter half way up... when you fill it up half way it takes awhile because its soaks in... but if you fill your flitter up half way you built up oil pressure faster so you will have oil faster all through out your motor

So you are suggesting to put half of fresh oil inside the fresh new oil filter then screw it in?

hmmmmmm. i have never heard of this. gonna change my oil tomarrow. gonna have to give that a shot.

I just take it to the Honda dealer and have them do it for $25 since it requires a special tool to get the filter off and you have to get a new washer everytime.

The preoiled filter came from the Moline tractors. The oil pumps would loose prime if they did not pump against pressure/or the filters were not full of oil. Cummings diesel engines had it in their maintenance manual even up to the late 1980's. The half filled filters came from these old timers with engines that had to tilt the filters. If it was full, oil spilled and a mess was made.

There is a delay in the start of ignition (if you listen you can here several compression strokes before the engine starts). No damage will be done if you do not fill the oil filter. BUT if you love your car you will...

Now you must ask yourself, what kind of Celica owner are you? Do you want the BEST for your car? It may not make a difference, but your car will see the extra care you are taking! It is therefore logical that it will show this same respect and go the extra mile in return, you don't want to put an empty filter on that baby do you? We didn't think so!

*cough* I have a car lift so mine is easy even have one of those things to drain the oil into that is pressurized so I can push the oil out when I want to drain it , which does remind me. I need to go home nextweekend and change my oil.

have guys i also put oil around the oil filter seal why do i do that?

When I get under a car and change the oil, I ALWAYS fill up the oil filter with oil before I put it on. Its not necessary, but its for the benefit for your car. Plus you usually don't have to add anymore oil to the car after it runs.

The oil filter instructions say to do so. The oil acts as a release agent for the o-ring when the filter is removed.

Autozone. At my store you have to ask for it. They keep it in the back.

I always use a new drain plug o-ring. anyone else?

also Royal Purple is a bit cheaper than Redline, and probably just as good. well haha some may say the same about a few other oils, but in general you do pay for a high quality full synthetic. I got Royal Purple 5w30 at Pep Boys.
