What the hell is it with Toyota's paint quality? I did my spring claying and buffing and polishing yesterday, and my black 02 looks tremendous - except for about 100 small chips in the front end (mostly bumper) which are extremely obvious now that the car is clean.

I walk by hundreds of cars each day in my corporate lot, and am constantly checking out other front ends for comparison. No other car, Buicks, Fords, Chevy, Honda, Mitsu, etc - has the same chipping problem. Many cars have similar shapes to the Celi, with low front end and spoiler, and still no chipping! These people drive in the same winter elements as I for chrissakes!!

Do I have to just plan on spending $250 for repainting every goddam spring, or is there something I'm missing here??

WTF?? angry

its not the paint that is chipping because of quality. it is usally from following cars too closley or on the highway this occurs alot. keep your distance especially behind big trucks.

my red celica is REALLY bad - I tried to get them to warranty it, with no luck of course. After the car was 4 months old, it was taken to the dealer because it had more chips then cars we had for 4 years. Toyota doesn't consider stone chips as a sign of defective paint - but, if the paint was old, or if it wasn't cured properly, it will be weaker and chip more easily. My car is now going on 5 years old, and the whole thing is covered in chips, even the doors, back spoiler.. it all needs to be repainted. Shitty.

My front is chipped up pretty bad also, so I ordered some of this to try and fix most of the chips myself:

OEM Toyota Paint tube http://www.brandsport.com/toy-00258-001d0.html

And the paint repair kit http://www.brandsport.com/plik-4503.html

Mine is the same. My previous BMW was bad but not as bad as this. My 13 year old Peugeot 205 GTI has about 3. The Toyota has gotten more than that in the last month!

Paint thickness has a lot to do with it and you would be surprised how much extra paint it takes to do a car with a decent coat. Times that by the amount of cars companies like Toyota sell and we are talking serious money.

I just wish the cheap bastards would do it properly and then include it in the price or just take the hit out of the profit.

I think I will give Chips away a ring and get them to sort them out.

I have stone chips all over my front bumper (I actually stopped waxing it because it filled in with a ton of white spots every time, looked terrible) and my hood is actually starting to rust a bit in one spot. I've got a new kit going on right now, and rather than pay to repaint the hood I think I'm just gonna get a carbon fibre one when the rust gets visible. It's so sad... frown

Is anyone else having problems with rust around the windshield? I was told it was from stone chips... I don't have rust anywhere else (except where it looks like it's starting in one spot on the hood) but there are about 10 spots around my windshield. Weird...

Mother's makes a product ( i haven't used it but hear it's great) for chips. You put a tiny dab of the touch up paint on the problem spot, then use the Mother's product which will take off the excess touch up paint, buff, wax, and you're done. I'm going to try and find it cause my front end looks just as sh##tty as the rest of yours...

Yea, I never get that. Light colored cars like Silver, White, and etc. have black colored parts underneath the paint. But Black cars, have white colored parts underneath its paint, wtf!

In any car, Toyota paint quality is shit. I was cleaning it once with Langka to get rid of excess touch up paint, and the f*cking OEM paint chipped off. I complaint to Langka and they said it will not harm an OEM paint and it was prolly done by a 3rd party mom and pop crap quality paint job. I was like, NO, it is an OEM paint. Hmmm...

I got Langka last year at Isaac's rec, wasn't terribly impressed with the results. It's not a rocket science to apply so maybe i'm just a damn perfectionist. I spent Sunday dabbing 100+ (yep 100+) paint chips w my black 202 touchup paint. I'm can't be doing this every spring, and cant have my car looking like doggy doo either.

Spoke with my local yota dealer this morning - they have a 3M vendor in 2x monthly to install clear bra. I'm gonna stop in next week and look at some of he finished product before I spend $500, but have a pretty good understanding the results are impressive

For $500 I would pay a pro to come sort it. In England we have a company called chips away who repair chips obviously and do it for about 100 a time ($170 ish) so no way is that 3m stuff worth it. Having seen pictures of cars with it you can so tell as well.

thats the bumpers primer, having an opposite color primer well contrast with the paint and make the paint look brighter. Just try painting white paint on top of white primer and compare it with paint on black primer, the black primered paint should look brighter.

Im not having many bad chips on my actual bumper, but on my body kit, thats a different story. I have touched it up twice with black automotive paint (jet black car) and everyday I drive it I feel like I need to touch it up again. Now I realize this does not have to do with the car or Toyota paint jobs but it still makes me mad! Unfortunately the kit is death gripped on there, so it fits nice, but is never coming off. smirk
