Celica Forums General Discussion General New Rims - dyno question

So I called this performance place and asked them if they can dyno my celi because I just got 3 inch bigger rims and he said there's nothing he can do and nothing anyone else can do, to his knowledge. So is this true? Isn't the speedometer gonna be off and mileage because the car thinks it's counting for a car with 15's so it's counting revolutions too early? I can't believe there's nothing anyone can do for our Celi's. I figured I'd need a new sensor or that they'd need to recalibrate something.

There are different types of dynos. A dynapack hooks up to your hubs so your wheels play no part in it so you could try and find one of these. I have never heard of anyone not being able to dyno because of bigger wheels so just look around for another shop. If your question is how do you realign your speedo, you can take it to toyota but they charge a whole lot.

Is that the best way to go or should I just go somewhere to realign to speedo?

the car will count the revolutions too late, thats why it says your doing slower than you really are.

hha my highschool physics class actually accounted for something!

Toyota will not touch it, they say there's nothing they can do and that the sensor was setup for the 15" rims and if they could do something, they aren't even sure they would LOL. Looks like Dyna Pack may be the solution? Has anyone here ever used one?

Are you saying that you correct your speedo while on the dyno?

No, I can't find a place that will dyno it. I called a speedo shop BUT they asked what kinda car and I told them 2003 Celica and they practically laughed at me and said, "sorry, we don't do that car and I don't think anyone else does". said they've never ever seen a place that will.

That's gotta be incorrect, someone out there has got to do it. I was told by Toyota that everything's gonna be off now that I got bigger rims - ECU, odometer, etc.

There are places that can do it. Just call around. I have heard of plenty of people who used their 18's and dynoed.

yeah, i wouldnt goto a shop that says they cant dyno with 18s.

It's not going to be off by that much just figure you are going like 5mph more than the gauge

But I'm not too concerned about the speed as much as how many miles being put on...the speedometer is counting revolutions for my stock wheel, so it's "turning over" too soon. I don't know what to do about this...I was told by Toyota that my computer will soon start giving me problems also and I'll get a CEL from the speed sensor. Right now, I'm completely LOST LOL.

the dealership is giving you bullshit, your not going to get a CEL from bigger rims, or hurt your ECU, but your milage and speed will be off, thats it. Anything else they say is trying to scare you. I hate dealerships when they try to scam you.

Oh you are the BEST! Thanks so much! Yeah the Toyota dealership is full of it, I know that there's no possible way this could mess things up because if that were true, MANY people would have problems and I'm sure I'd have heard of it!

The place I called was Dick's Speed-O-Tach in Phoenix. Even Discount Tire said there's nothing. I couldn't believe it. I will call these guys tomorrow morning because I see a Celi right in the front on their site! They're only like 15 mins from my house Much more convenient I owe ya!

OK well I have new info now...I have the low profile tires and they are 24" from side to side, as are the original "balloon" style ones I had on my stock rims. If they're both 24" across, I shouldn't have mileage/speedometer problems, should I? My wheels in my head just keep turning and turning LOL. Geez, I need to sleep. Time for my bedtime, gotta wake up in a few hours for work damnit

well using stock at a 195-65-15 and going to a 215-35-18 like you have in your profile its gonna be off by 4.7 % when your car says 60 its actuly going 57.5

go with a 225-40 next time lol

are you just trying to get a dyno to see power ? if so wheel size shouldn't have a effect on it other then more rotating mass sure our car is reading wrong but the dyno doesn't read off your car..

just go some where and don't say anything lol just get the dyno if the numbers seem that far off (in which im wrong about the tire thing but i don't think i am) then jsut take 4.7% off

i ahve to do this with my gas milage cause i have slightly larger tires used to get 300 miles to tank now i get 260 but when i take in the percent diffrenceim back to my 300

I'm wanting to see how far I'm off on the speedometer and get the thing adjusted so I don't have to "guess" how fast I'm going. I was told I could get the speedometer/odometer back to normal by going to a speedo/tach shop where they'd dyno it and they'd either have some sort of VSS(I think, don't remember)or new sensor or something OR recalibrate the speedometer.

I'm also worried about the odometer - am I putting on more or less miles than what the odometer says?

I'd be really interested to know if you can recalibrate the stock speedo. If you take it in, please post back and let us know how it goes.

No worries, I'll let you all know I think I can either recalibrate the speedo, or get a new speedo gear.

Well I called that place here in North Scottsdale and they said they can't do anything, either. So I'm kinda stuck I guess. Everywhere I go they tell me there's nothing that I can do to fix any issues that getting bigger wheels causes.
