you heard wrong... once the insurance company totals it... it's a salvage title... it'll even show up on your registration card... there used to be ways to get around it... but i don't think there is anymore...

you CAN get a wrecked car that isn't a salvage title... but only if the insurance company doesn't see it.. or total it...

once a car becomes "totalled" that is to say that the damage done to the car costs more then what the car is worth, if you are to buy it back it will come with a salvage title... it is ILLEGAL to drive a car with a salvage title. i repeat you cannot legally drive a car with a salvage title. you will have to go to a tags place, get a form. in the form you have to put 4 pictures each side, front and back windows up of the car after the accident. then after you fix the car aka make it legal to drive. 4 more pictures of the car in the same position. mechanic will then have to inspect the car and take an inspection sticker cut it in half and put it in the form. (he also has to sign off on all 8 photos) in the form you also have to describe what you did to fix the car. show receipets for all parts purshased or they will re make you pay tax on them. after the form is filled out you take it back to the tags place and pay money from them to send it it. it can take over a month before you get it back and what you get back is a RECONSTRUCTED title this basically states that at one time was totalled and is now fixed. the only thing i think it will affect is the resell value of the car.

^^^ yeah, that's right... reconstructed/salvage.. same difference haha... it's just not a clean title anymore...

and you're right it would be illegal to drive on a salvage title (at first when i read that i was like what? no way.. haha) but it's illegal because that would mean that you don't have the correct title and registration for the car... you have to send in for that like you said and they change the word "salvage" to "reconstructed" i totally forgot about that... funny thing is i print out pictures of fixed vehicles (all 4 sides) for my dad almost every day... and i still didn't remember
