Has anybody ever heard of this, pr has anybody ever tried it on our cars and had it work successufly. I just heard about it and was wondering. Hers is the link STS [ ststurbo.com]

ive heard it works. never seen it on a celica, but some matrix had it... ill see if i can dig up the link.

Yeah, I've read some articles about these remote mount turbo kits. They seem to still function like they should. The issue that was raised is, "with all the extra lengths of piping, how would turbo lag be affected?" From the test I read in one of my magazines on a Tundra, there wasn't any lag issues. And they actually said the extra lengths of pipe helped cool the air before it reached the intake. I haven't heard anything about the kit on smaller cars like ours. They just released a kit for the new GTO.

The one question I have involves the air filter. From the pictures, it's mounted underneath the rear of the car as well. Wouldn't that make it more likely for issues with dirt, water, etc? Seems dangerous to me.

I don't think there's a problem with the air filer being located there. The filter on a CAI is in a bad spot also and doesnt have problems unless you have a low quality filter. On their site it says there isn't a problem with the filter being there even in an area that rains all the time. So... I even went far enough to e-mail STS after seeing this a month ago to see if they will eventually have plans to do this for the Celica and I didn't even get a reply. I live in the same city so I figured why not. Guess they don't care about imports (or potential customers). The only cars they have made setups for other than the Honda are GM produced cars/trucks. They probably have someone that works there that has a Honda or something. My bro has a Denali that he's going to turbo eventually and was going to refer him to them...

You lose too much heat! The hotter air will create more velosity, spinning up the turbine faster. Once the turbine is spinning, what dose the aft mount turbo do? Pipe the compressed air back to the engine! There is too much friction loss in the compressed air through all that pipe! Besides, There is no way I could keep that air filter clean!! How does the exahust pressure effect the factory pipe joints in the factory exahust line?
I like novel approach, but it just seems second class!

well with a fully sealed system, the length of the output from the turbo should not matter in the lag for the boost, the length does allow the air to be cooler by the surface area of the pipe allowing for heat exchange. and the quality of the air filter has nothing to do with letting water in. if they designed a way for the filter to be watertight, then there would be no drawbacks. they did a mod like this on tv, did well also, but i dont see the celi being able to use it. the turbo replaces the muffler in it supposidly attenuates the noise coming out. so that is cool.
how does air have friction loss ?

air friction loss = drag
ploss = ξ 1/2 ρ v2 (1)
or
hloss = ξ v2/ 2 g (2)
where
ξ = minor loss coefficient
ploss = pressure loss (Pa (N/m2), psi (lb/ft2))
ρ = density (kg/m3, slugs/ft3)
v = flow velocity (m/s, ft/s)
Loss of pressure & velosity. For the pressurized intake and the exahust to drive the turbine. This STS is a Second-class Turbo System!

They claim an improvement in gas mileage...that's your first clue that something isn't right. They're just trying to build up hype and give people any reason to buy it.
Still, there is some hard evidence that it will work. However, it will never equal a traditional turbo setup. Depending on how expensive it is it doesn't sound so bad for someone who just wants a basic turbo setup for a little extra power, and doesn't plan on going any further.

This kind of kits are mostly for V8s(z28s, firebirds(same crap), where there is not space for a kit up front, thats why they dont make them fro smaller cars with plenty of space, trust me i here about this kit a lot more than i would like to having about 8 friends with Z28s mustangs and GTOs
