there are different kinds of burning smells. Clutch burning smells different than a functioning cat, which smells different than dying brakes. The only way to tell is to describe the smell in greater detail.

Not sure if the clutch is old when I bought it. It had 60K on it when I bought it. When do clutches normally go bad?

hey bro, let me tell you it's the " clutch "!! I am the expert of this cause that happens to me too. After replacing a new clutch, it ends up fine.

Since the smell is only when you reverse and probably not very strong of an odor and not burning when driving you still got a some time to replace it. Mine just recently started to fry too, its got 77K miles on it now and bought it with 70K miles, so I guess its somewhere between 50K-80K miles depending on driving. You might as well get a new lightened flywheel while your at it too if you got the dough.

when was the last time you had an oilchange...if it was recent...then the guy might of spilled some fluid on to your motor and its causing that stench...look into that before you make things complicated

when i bought my car, it had 12,500 miles on it. when i asked the salesman about the clutch, he said it was at about 80%. that seemed a little low to me, but i guess that's about right. i can't imagine how it is, now (i learned to drive stick on this car).

Reverse ratio doesn't have the synchro-mesh that switches all of the other gears. Start it up, wait for a minute or 2, put it into reverse, back up slowly, and put it in neutral. It takes like 10sec's for the tranny to spin the gears at the same speed as the engine.

its only clutch if he holds it too long and burns it up, if you just engage the reverse and ride the brake the car drives itself without gas

^yup, if you hold down your clutch, press the gas to hard, and rev too high, you'll get that smell cause i made a thread like this awhile back. in short, you're smelling your clutch like everybody else said...

My car also does that. Like burn rubber when im at rest and reving my car. I figure is my clutch. Going to the dealer to check it out tomorrow Wednesday. Might be clutch or transmisson fluid. Thinking trani fluid.
