So I am replacing my entire head with a new one for my 2002 gt. I am replacing the water pump, spark plugs, head gasket, valve cover gasket, serpentine belt, and vacuum hoses attached to the head while I'm at it. Is there anything else relevant to replacing the head that I should change while I'm at it (o2 sensors, chain tensioner, ect)? Does the chain tensioner have a tendency to go out or leak?

why would you replace the head? from my experience the heads from the 1zzfes are built proof.

1zzfe 360k miles
1zzfe 260k miles
1zzfed 203k miles
1zzfed 130k miles
1zzfed 170k miles

These are the ones in our family, and I have rebuilt all of them without replacing any hardware...I cleaned them up and took a wire wheel and cleaned all the carbon build up from the valve, and put in new valve stem seals.

other then the obvious headgasket/piston rings, I have even reused (forgot to order replacement so took the risk, realized during assembly) the oem headbolts on the 1zzfed with 130k miles with success so far...

Howdy guys...old thread...but my 2001 GT is using a lot of oil (quart every 300 miles or so?)...some blue smoke on startup...no leaks visible...which points me to the valve guide seals?

I'm wondering if the head has to come off to replace the seals as I imagine it's a much more expensive job if the head has to come off.

Thanks...
