Did toyota fix/improve the problem of the sucky lift bolts on GTS's by 2001 or 2002 out of the factory? Reason I ask is i am going to trade my 2000 in for one with less miles and its between a 2001 and 2002. Any other differences between the two years besides fuel cut off.

dude the 2000 is the best version but no matter which one you get you should demand them to be replaced or just replace them right away yourself just to be safe!

No, toyota did not fix the sucky lift bolt problem. Unfortunatly, it doesn't seem like they ever will so lift bolt replacement is going to be regular maintainence for 2ZZ engine people.

When do you know when a lift bolt is broken?
Do you just loose lift or power overall? smile

I'd like to know this the same thing, how can I tell if they are broken?

also, can a shop do this? I will NOT let me dealer open my engine, they WILL break it

i thought toyota put in the better lift bolts in the 2003's
and also same question how can you tell if its broken coz in my ride sometimes ill feel it sometimes i wont..sometimes it'll kick hard and sometimes its just a little jolt...

They just gave the ends of the bolts a more dramatic taper so it will be easier to extract after it has broken off.

Your intermittent power loss problems in lift definitely sounds like the symptom of a broken lift bolt to me. Some times people with broken lift bolts will have no lift at all. Some people experience the same thing you are, which is occasionally having "weak" lift. Some times people have problems where their lift is like an on off switch, on one pass the lift won't work at all, but then it works perfectly fine on the next run.

Basically, if you are experiencing any irregularities with lift, the lift bolts is probably the first place you should check in to because it is the most likely source of your problems with lift.

Anyone have any resources on the net showing how to check if they're bad, how to replace them, part numbers, etc? My neighbor is a god when it comes to rebuilding engines so if it comes to it, I want to give him all the info I can if something ever happens to my lift bolts. Thanks.

Ch was right except for the taper thing.

BTW I have pics of a broken lift bolt install and will make a vid on sunday when I do my teamates car.

PM if you want the pics and part #'s of the lift bolts cause they arent called lift bolts and the dealer might be confused. lol

The reason they break is beause they werent tapered enough and there was an odd strain point causing them to break. The better taper eliminates the strain but I'm sure they will inevitably break too.

Can you guys tell me one thing.

There must be a reasio why toyota lowered the redline in the 2002 model.

Was the redline too high be4? Was that damaging the lift bolts

This is the mystery question of this celica generation. I bought a 2000 gts, and personally have no clue as to what "lift" refers to (i'm obviously stupid), and further more can't tell if there is something wrong with the car if a "lift" bolt is broken. I've seen the TSB - but still, they mean nothing as they don't indicate what to look for if you suspect a problem with these so called "lift" bolts. Must be a racing thing - don't know.

If some kind person would fill some of us in on what the crap to look for, that'd be cool. (not a TSB - a car hint)

Lift refers to variable lift engagement on the 2ZZGE powerplant in the GTS. When you rev past 6K on the tach, a smal pin is pushed out using oil pressure, underneath the rocker arms, this lets the motor access the high-lift lobes of the camshafts, and you end up with an extra 40 HP at the crank.

Lift also refers to the "sweet spot" between 6K and redline on the tach, (i.e. when my engine is in Lift, it pulls like crazy)

Depending on the transmission, lift has it's benifits. On a 6-spd GTS, the trans can be shifted in such a way as you can maintain rev's in the lift zone through all gears. On the Sportshift cars, lift pulls hard to redline, you shift, and it drops about 1000 RPM's below the sweet spot, but with tight shifts, an auto GTS will still haul, and recover's quickly.

Another posibility is that the lift rocker pins are worn (Rounded off). In which case, you would have to replace them. However, they are rated to last at least 100,000 miles or so. The more you engage lift, though, the faster they'll wear.

I try to keep my revs below 4K in daily driving, I still engage lift a couple times a week, to keep the mechanism on it's toes, and also run the motor hard only when I need the extra acceleration.

I reccommend every serious tuner buy a copy of the shop manual, learn how to service the engine yourself. If your cylinder head needs work, it's cheaper to remove it yourself and drop it off at a shop for rebuilding, porting, whatever.

If you are a skilled mechanic, with access to good tools, you could easily do almost 100% of the work yourself (with a decent manual, anyways.

If it's under warranty, have the shop do it. if your dealership sucks, find another dealership. At my dealership, they are a bit lazy, but they have awesome mechanics there, and are more than willing to do work on my car with little more than a request for service. They did an awesome job rebuilding my motor, and outsource all the specialized chores (like my head rebuild).

how much would a life bolt cost? and how much does it usually cost with labor? does any one have a picture of it?

I have an auto (shift sport - which i never use - and refuse to let my reckless b-friend use smile ). My celi shifts automatically at about 1.5 to 3 rpms, depending on the road. And judging by the condition of the car when I bought it, it was well taken care of... so I don't think it was driven hard wink

OK I'm gonna start a whole new thread full of lift bolt FYI. because too many people are asking about it and I keep having to respond to a lot of pm's. I dont mind but I'd like there to be one place so I dont have to repeat myself alot. lol

BTW lift bolts are $1 - $0.54 depending on how much markup your dealer tries to rip you for. And they will. Had a friend pay $1.36 for 1. I paid $1.08 for 2 lol

i took my 02 in and they just said if they had any wear and tear or they were out that the cel would be on and you want to know how long it took them to tell me this 5 hours

and one quick question will putting the newer lift bolts in will it make lift stronger or anything

And ^^^^^ if they told you it would cause a CEL they lied to you. lol NO cel will come on for your lift not working wink Only way to know for sure is to pull them out and check.

i have a 2000 gts and i think (havnt been in anyone else gts so its hard to compare) my lift bolts are just fine. i still get adequate lift in my opinion.

Hi im new here. I own a 2005 toyota corolla xrs but it has a 2zzge inside I was wonder does lift bolts only wares out only if you hitting lift.. it well be very helpfull please
