I want HIDs. I read on here somewhere that the ?2003? and up celicas have stock HID housing. I also read that an HID conversion for the stock non-HIDs wont look right, so I'm trying to find the correct information so i can get HIDs.

(i tried the search, but my gay ass laptop wont load the pages)

HID's were never standard on the celica's but did become an option in the later models.. i think startin in 2002 or 2003 but i'm not certain...

I want HID's but I want to do it right so that would either be getting some OEM hid headlamps and sticking them into mine ...

or getting my OEM h7 headlamps and swaping out the projector for ones that were specifically made to handle HID output..

some also just stick in HID kits.. it works yes but not as good as HID designed projector to maximize light output and get the nice twinkle of light ..

best and OEM color temp is 4100-4300k

HID and h7 headlamps are diferent sized.. and have some differences.. heres some pics i took of the hid and h7 headlamp.. read the captions to help tell the difference from the two..

Hella ballasts are standard OEM on BMW, MBZ, Lexus, etc.

Some people buy HID retrofit kits such as K2, Eagle Eyes, or Misterjungs thinking they just pop it into the Celica's housing and they would be just as bright and pretty as the BWM's or MBZ's. Or they buy the higher temperature kits such as 8000K thinking that it would give them the S2000 look. The truth is that everything has to do with the light housing. The S2000 uses the 4300K bulbs, which shines pure white if you look straight into it. The pretty prism effect (blue/purple) that you see when a S2000 comes down the street is caused by the optical design of the projector, and not the color of the bulbs.

The Celica has free-form projectors. Unfortunately, it does not have shields (light shines everywhere). Fortunately, the Philips D2R bulbs fit perfectly in the H7 slot. How do I know? I have the HID kit from an Infinity G35 with Philips D2R on my car. The D2R bulb has a built-in shield which shields off the sides and the bottom-half of the bulb. This reduces the glare and gives it a much sharper cut-off. And it eliminates the shadows caused by the return wires.

If you want your Celica to look like the S2000 or BMW, the best thing to do is to replace the stock projectors. I found that the projectors from an Audi TT (very small) would fit nicely in our Celicas. These projectors are designed for HID's, and would give you the pretty prism effect. Of course, you would have to take your headlights apart to do this. A complete HID kit with Audi TT projectors, Philips HID bulbs, and Hella Ballast would run about $450. There are companies out there that would do the installation, including HID kit for $800 - $1000. You would have to ship your headlights to them. The whole process would take 3-4 weeks.

I started off with the Mcculloch 5300K retrofit kit. It was bright, but the lights were everywhere (lack of shield in our projector). So, I replaced it with the G35 kit. And I am very happy with it. But, it is still not as pretty as the S2000 because our projectors weren't designed for HID's.

i dont have the attention span to read that HUGE post... so i wil just ask if i fill the hole in the stock housing... will that fix everything?? will i be able to put the hids in there and have full function of them?

look buddy, erick here, who knows his HIDs, is trying to help you. if you dont have the attention span to read it then you dont get anymore help. Read the post and figure it out.

dont be so harsh. I love my OEM hids, esp the motorized aiming. fun to play with wink but it is in no way cost effective to but the oem hid headlights. jsut get a hd kit and you will be happy smile

and cycocelica... daaamn chill... i was just being stupid.. everybody that knows me knows that i read that entire post at least twice..

when i had my hid's it seemed to b brighter than oem one when i was beside a celica with oem hid's. but his hid's had a wider range of light when mine was just in one direction it was not as evenly spreaded as the oems, but bright as if not brither than them. but with the oem one you could see a lot more

yup you'd get a nice prism effect.. it's all in the housings design..

with our stock ones you have to pretty much choose .. do you want color or performance.. with stock oem hid housing you get both..

Just to clarify, for OEM non-HID housing Celicas to have properly displaying HIDs, they need to get new light housing, right?

There is no physical attribute of the housing that is stopping you from upgrading to HID bulb/system on the stock Celica halogen-type headlight housings.

The only thing you may notice are "UFOs" from the light shining through two headlamp vents inside the housing.

If you install your HID bulbs upside down you will get these "train tracks."
They are created by the electric wire inside the the HID bulb.

Wow; this explains why the 2003 GTS I just bought in Pennsylvania was shining UFOs on the trucks I passed on the highway home back to Texas! Thanks for the details.
