Hey guys, got my 2001 Celica GTS a few months ago with 45k miles on it, and I used to go to a mechanic for this stuff but im pretty sure the mechanic is the one that fucked it up, I bought it to him for one problem and when I got it back, this noise was happening so I dont feel like trusting a mechanic anymore and I want to learn to do this myself (so please be patient with me, I've been in so many car group chats and everyone is stuck up asshole who looks down on people who are trying to learn about car or dont know anything and im slowly losing my faith/hop of finding nice gear heads.) so does anyone know what it could be? I'll attach a video attachment I took to pinpoint the sound. It sounds like a quarter rattling in a can and it gets worse (louder) when I'm driving. Thanks in advance guys!

Disclaimer: I am not a certified mechanic.

If I were in your scenario, I would probably take it back to the mechanic to have it diagnosed and fixed--potentially for free if they recognize it could have happened under their care.

As far as what the actual issues are, here are my guesses:
- Loose heatshield over the exhaust manifold
- Loose engine mount bolt
- AC lines vibrating against each other
- Timing chain, belt tensioner or both (unlikely, since your noise persists as you rev)
There could be other things that I have not listed as well. I'm guessing based off of general consensus and personal experience.

To my ear, it doesn't sound like any sort of any engine knock so that's good news. Once again, I would probably take it back to the original mechanic. If not, I would take it to another reputable mechanic. It's going to be a little tedious to self-diagnose if you don't know what to look for. I'm not saying it's impossible to though--more power to you if you do diagnose and fix it on your own smile

$4,500! I got it for a steal because the kid didn't want it because it wasn't a 4 door car. (His loss, my gain (; )

And thanks for your reply!
