I've had the car for about 2 months. The airbag light has always been on (steady on, no flashing codes) and I'm wanting to try and fix it, the car has been in no major wrecks according to carfax. The previous owner did say he ran over something in the road and that's why the front bumper is a bit ripped up. So maybe that caused it, I'm not sure. I've heard it can be a sensor or just the cables under the seats, my concern is how risky/dangerous is it to try and work on this? I don't want the airbags to deploy and I don't want to have to pay a dealership or shop hundreds when it was just a loose cable under the seat. Is there a way I can go about this safely or should I really just take it to a shop? I want it fixed, not just the light switched off.

You'll be fine working on it, if you don't pry at the mech directly on your steering wheel.

The plug under the seats is extremely easy to check and tighten together (reconnect) if it's loose. That would be the first route of diagnosis. Also check your fuses for anything that may have prematurely been tripped. There is a fuse diagram in the how-to section which covers both fuse boxes (passenger footwell/center, and engine bay)

Chances are that the airbag light is on due to the seat belt retractor somewhere in the car. For me, I have to feed my seatbelt back into the housing in both the passenger and driver side of the front of the car. My car is also accident free and seat belt retractors can cause the airbag light, especially in older Toyotas. Just a thought.
