Celica Forums General Discussion Engine and Performance Mechanic Said Celica in Poor Health

Hey gang! Really need your experience and help here.

I recently moved to California. I shipped Cecilia (my 2001 GT) with me. I brought her to a trusted mechanic in the area for maintenance and was surprised any thew report I got back.

I was wondering if you guys could take a look at the report and tell me if it's alarming as the guy says it is.

He says he will fix the brakes (for $800) but that he won't touch anything else because of the rust. He recommended that before I spend a penny on the car that I get it Smog Control checked and see if it passes. If it doesn't pass he said he is afraid to touch it because of the rust.

(I had the car maintained in Cleveland a year ago and they mechanic there didn't seem so concerned). I'm wondering if California mechanics freak out about rust more than Northern Ohio ones.

What do you guys recommend?

I have had a mechanic declare my Celica unsalvageable, but have driven for 7 years since.

Your mechanic is correct about making sure you check for California emissions before putting any money into it.

If the smog control passes, then I would find a cheaper brake place to do your brake work.

Oil on the coil packs is normal.
