I recently bought a Celica VVT-i and I'm loving it, except it has a certain noise at 50mph, no matter the gear I'm in. In the video below I start out in 3rd gear and you can see the following shifts to 4th and 5th. I'm keeping the car at approximately 50mph the whole time, with a light touch on the accelerator. You can hear the rumble of the road and then there's a higher-pitched noise which is present throughout, at its loudest when I shift into 5th. This is the noise I'm talking about.
The noise is only present when using the accelerator and when I'm in gear - let off the accelerator and the noise goes, and I've rolled down a hill at 50mph in neutral with no sound. There is also no noise when braking. In the situation when the noise occurs, if I were to go over 55 or under 45, it would stop. I've not seen reports of anything quite like this elsewhere so I thought I'd make this post. The noise does increase in pitch slightly as I speed up (only in that narrow speed band, though).
Some information that may or may not be relevant to this, I'll just provide it anyway:
-New clutch with 4000 miles on it (previous owner had it done) -New tyres all round (again, previous owner had this done)
