also i hear that for more rap r&b you want a sealed box, but for rock/metal a ported box is preferred by most...(correct if i'm wrong)

No to everyone.
Really is no best subs but there are quite a few that head the crowd.
Adire Audio Brahma series, these use the XBL2 tech which is the hottest technology out right now. Superior sound quality and near unlimited spl capabilities.
Resonant Engineering XXX series, also uses XBL2 and is an extreme throw woofer which has top notch sound quality and near unlimited spl capabilities.
Digital Designs 9500 series, still on top, probably holds more records than most subs. Ability to take upto 4kw rms for daily driving and 3-4x that for burps.
Orion H2, new dual gap technology is extremely innovative and make this sub a spl champ and damn good in sq. I personally own 2 so if you specifics pm me.
Elemental Designs A series, unparralled sound quality and extremely natural sounding. The most affordable. Awesome spl to boot.
Elemental O series also has incredible sq and is more focused on accurate response.
JLW7, yea its great and whatever if you can get it for about half of what it goes for in stores.
Image Dynamics IDMAX, great sq sub with a ton of spl possibilities.
Treo Engineering SSX And CSX series spl, spl, spl, and daily capibilities
Solo X, can take tons of power and can hit big numbers.
Phoenix Gold Titanium elite, there is really nothing great about this sub, its uses a regular motor design and really is just overpriced, it would have been a great $300 sub but not $900...
MTX 9500, dont know much but I hear they are up to par with most high excursion subs out.
Eclipse TiPro's are ok but nothing special
Crystal CMPx2, dont know much yet, but supposed to have great sq and decent spl
Focal WX series are supposed to have excellent sq
There's more but I cant remember them all...

oh as for best subs for you, i dont go by what you listen to, i go by what kind of sound you want. SPL or SQ?
If your into sq, I'd recommend a med-power subs such as a Resonant SE series or an Elemental K or O series.
Sealed Vs. Ported, once again, what do you want...

I've got more rock music and stuff like that that i listen too, that and heavy shit. I have two alpine type r 12's in a sealed box powered by two m320 or m300 amps, can't remember what they are, but they're single mono amps, one for each sub, puts out great sound for the music, and they aren't gonna take your bank account over. I always get compliments from my friends on the sound.

There's more but I cant remember them all... Please. ahem... he works for jl. and im just cuious, but what kind of subs compete with the w7? any of them listed? It depends on what your goal is. The Adire Brahma is sorta of like the original, the leader of the pack. its the first sub to have the XBL2 technology and has been the model for a lot of the subs listed. I owned 2 15" Brahma's so I've had a lot of experience with them. Their sound Quality is unmatched. It is every bit as good as a W7. To most people decifering the difference between the 2 would be near impossible. Alot of the other subs are the same story. Mobile Entertainment mag just reviewed the Elemental Designs 12A in a recent issue and had nothing but good things to say. I'd post a link but it isn't on their site yet. If you guys are really interested visit some of the manufacturers websites, but also check out another forum. www.caraudioforum.com [ caraudioforum.com] It's where I post(2300+) and there are a lot of people there that know a great deal about every sub listed and more. Also a lot of the manufacturers listed post a lot and give great advice. So just so you know visit if you want to get some info about a lot of these subs. Furthermore, the best sub for you is really dependant on what you want your final result to be. For me, I'm an spl guy so I went with dual 15" Orion H2's. But if your looking for more balanced and smooth sound with excelent reproduction at moderate levels then a 10" IDMAX might be for you. First you really have to determine your goal before you can really narrow down your choices.
