When you ask yourself if it is a good idea to swap your motor out, you got to first know which kind of car you have. Obviously you have a 7th gen Celica, now you must think about the wonderful family of motors Toyota produces. They make many awesome race engines. You must narrow your choices down to a few or even a couple potential motors. The only motor that would cost the less to swap would be the 3S-GTE. Research the 3S-GTE.

the 3zz is not a new engine. it is a stroker kit, and stroker kits just produce more displacement. the kit includes a new crank, connecting rods, pistons and i believe it comes with o-rings. Compression is customized.

when you order it up you get the hole block with pre fabd for around 5k and just the intenals are like 2 or 3k cheaper but you have to have it done by someone on ur engine

(GTS) 2ZZ to 3ZZ $5079.85
Includes 3zz engine (used 2zz base)
We recommend fuel settings done with Power FC or Fcon V-Pro (sold separately)

The 3zz internals kit includes:
Engine Crank, Connecting Rods, Pistons,
Crank End Spacer Ring, Crank End Oil Seal,
Front Spacer Washer, Metal Head Gasket.

Kit Price $2434.95

So that means that if we use our own engine (2ZZE), then we only need to get the 3ZZ internals kit right? Coz i dont exactly want to have to buy another 2ZZE engine when i have a perfectly good one that will be doing nothing. If so, then i guess that it means that the only difference between a 2ZZE and a 3ZZE is just watever is in that internals kit...

If you turbo your GTS and you don't do anything to the VVTL-i then you will have boost lift which equals orgasm.

So you will have boost before lift and during lift...so you basically have lift just a whole lot better...

now all we gotta do is squeeze in the 3zz internals and we should hypothetically have boost, lift and have more horsepower to start with! i wanna know whether having 3zze internals affects lift tho...

ok...let me get something staight...r you guys saying that we can now squeeze out over 300hp out of a 1.8L 4 cylinder??

maybe my math needs some work but lets see...

stock GTS = 185hp , 165WHP
3zz conversion kit = 220hp ... difference of 35hp
XS Engineering's GTS Turbocharger System = 241WHP ... diff. 76WHP
Intake + Exhaust + Headers = about 15WHP

So lets see...185hp + 35hp + 76WHP + 15WHP = 311+ HP...not to mention TURBO AND LIFT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

rofl i honestly doubt it would add up that way as well. But im sure if it can be done, it would be awesome. thumbsup However, not sure how the 3zz internals will affect lift and addition of turbo tho.. confused

minus headers cause you don't throw new ones with turbo its has its own. but still and from what i have been gatherin lift still kicks ass. so i feel dependin on what the engine will be able to handle for boost then ya i think 300 isn't that outta reach...but with eip's turbo 300 can be achieved with just the 2zz engine so it shouldn't be a problem with the 3zz i would think.

Ricer math abounds.

The 3zz kit boosts the compression ration from 11.5:1 up to 13:1, what does this mean? Basically you can't run a turbo without race gas or your engine will blow up.

What you CAN do is get the 3zz internals and get low compression 8.8:1 pistons. Then if you strap on a turbo you can exceed the XS Engineering limit of 6psi and start boosting very high.

The problem is the XS kit is set up for the 2zz 180hp (at the crank) engine, with regards to turbo, wastegate, and ecu. It has an internal wastegate which will limit your gains.

With an el-cheapo ghetto custom turbo (which is cheaper than the XS kit) running on lower compression pistons without a 3zz internals kit, you could push 350 horsepower.

Of course, most of the ricers don't understand that pushing that much horsepower will just smoke your tires to death.

In order to handle power you need a limited slip differential, clutch, and I'd throw a flywheel in there while your transmission is dropped.

TIRES are also very important.

Lift exists with the XS kit. You experience turbo spool up by about 4000RPM, and at 5800RPM your lift engages (this is lowered from 6200 RPM by the PowerFC that comes with the kit). Another benefit is that the kit allows lift to remain past the original 7800 limit up to 8300RPM, however, you start losing power past around 7600RPM, it's only useful so that when you shift to the next gear you remain in lift.

As for the 3S-GTE, one guy did it for about $8000 dollars and is pushing 530 horsepower. eek

the one disadvantage i can think of with the 3sgte is that..no lift frown

Lol i want lift!~ grin
also wheneveer engines get trasplanted...somehow or rather they just never run as smoothly as before for watever reason. i know that with a good workshop this issue may not even arise but nonetheless...not something i want to experiment with...

thats cool that the 3zz is 220 stock, but heres just a few things to keep in mind about the 3sgte. a 3rd gen 3sgte(j-spec motor) is at 245 stock, and a 2nd gen 3s is at 220 stock. For those of you who have looked at a 3sgte, you know that the 3s has a top mount intercooler. well, with the 7th gen celicas, theres no way that it would clear the hood. so with the swap, one thing that has to be changed, among other things, is the top mount to a front mount intercooler. since you would have to fabricate custom piping, you might as well upgrade your intercooler at this time, instead of mounting the stock on the front using custom piping. so, if you have a 2nd gen, your hp is already a little abouve 220. also, someone mentioned that the 3zz block is $5000 if i heard correctly. well, you can get a used 2nd gen 3s complete with wire harness, and ecu for about $2500 to $3500 bucks. the 3s is a pretty strong engine, the bottom end can support about 350 hp easily. a fully built 3s can easily set you at 450 to 500 horses. on upgrading the turbo alone to a t3t4 your looking at 350 hp. now will the 3zz put you close to 350?

I DONT THINK A 3ZZ CAN COMPARE TO THE 3SGTE 3RD OR 2ND GEN.HP IS ONLY HALF THE STORY,THE TORQUE ON THE 3S IS AS HIGH AS THE HP AND THE BORE TO STROKE RATIO IS IDENTICAL THE 3ZZ STROKE IS DIFFERENT TO THE BORE SO ITS BEHAVIOR IN THE HIGH RPM BAND SHOULD BE SIMILAR TO THE GT.FOR 5000.00 BUCKS I WOULD GET A REAR CLIP FROM A MR2 AND DO THE SWAP.(AS OPPOSED TO A CELICA)SINCE YOU WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO USE THE INTERCOOLER AND TRANNY FROM THE GT4 ANY WAY.(DONT KNOW IF 7TH GEN TRANNY CAN FIT 3SGTE,GOT TO LOOK INTO THAT)

HEY SEAN,WHAT INTAKE MANIFOLD ARE YOU RUNNING? AND DID YOU CHANGE THE FUEL SYSTEM FROM A RETURNLESS SYSTEM TO ONE THAT HAS A RETURN LINE? ( LOOKS PRETTY TIGHT WHERE THAT MANIFOLD IS!)

as far as the intercooler goes, your right a gt4 wont work, and even if it did, good luck trying to find one. it all has to be customized. and as far as the tranny, the 7th gen celi cant fit the 3s. you have to either use a 2nd or 3rd gen mr2 tranny(sw20/21)
