Celica Forums General Discussion General turning the steering wheel to the limit

on either side ..
someone said that was bad for your car .
is that true? does it harm the car in
any way ?

maybe for some. for the celica even if you turn your steering wheels all the way to its limit...you still won't get your wheels to turn 180 degrees. so when you apply the gas..your car will give in the correct way. just don't slam the pedal.

it is a little bad to turn ur wheel completely when ur car is not moving on 0 mph. it is bad for the power steering.

It does wear the CV Joint boot more then if you do not turn the wheel all the way. At least that is what I was told by my friend who is a mechanic.

should have mentioned that, thanks. yeah i wouldnt recommend turning your steering wheel all the way when at a complete stop.

as some of you already know...i have a paper route and the way i throw is one side of the street at a time. so obviously when i'm done with one side, i make a u-turn and throw the other side. when doing these u-turns, the celica is small enough so that at an interection i can make a complete turn without stopping (of course you have to turn the steering wheel to its limits). i do this several times a day, every single day ever since i've had my celica and i have noticed no problems coming from this.

I think it'd be fine to turn the wheels to the limit, otherwise why are we allowed to turn the wheel that much? Of course, don't turn it when stopped like some guys have mentioned. But in winter, like right now, I use the hand brake sometimes if I need to pull a quick u-ie but that's only in snow, and I don't even need to turn the wheel much either. But again, not recommended, I just do it like once or twice a year for the hell of it.

never driven on snow but its easier to steer on wet road. for you turn, i just punch a little and steer a little more than the regular uturn degree, and im perfect in the lane. even floor it an inch and turn at the same time. dont even turn ur wheel as much as you turn usually takes you to turn

Is it hard to throw papers from the celi. It seems that since the windows are so high compared to where you sit it would take a lot of practice.

i bet you can get creative and toss it out the sunroof. maybe even practice hitting the porch or something. could become like a finely tuned skill

actually, this is very true. it was a royal pain to do this at first and i thought i had the wrong idea. (i preveiously owned a ranger and it was just fine to throw out of). also the window is hard to throw out of because the angle comes down so fast.

but after a couple of weeks of this everything was perfectly fine..it just took some adjusting. it feels perfectly normal now. although i wouldnt mind having a 2nd car being automatic..seing as folding, bagging, driving, throwing, and shifting at the same time gets to be a hassle when the papers are thick. you get used to it though. i have no second thoughts on buying my celica..i absolutely love it (haha outside of throwing papers)

haha i've actually done this a couple of times. the way you usually throw is out the driver side window (obviously) so you drive in the wrong lane of the street (this is not really a prob because you are throwing anywhere from 3-5 in the morning when there is hardly a car on a neighborhood road).

but anyway...at the beginning of my route my papers are stacked up high on the passenger seat & floor because i have a full load of papers. so sometimes when i miss a house, instead of backing up i'll just make the u-turn at the end of the street and as i throw the opposite side i'll hit the house i missed with a paper out of the sunroof...you can't throw it very far though..but its pretty easy to get it to the driveway.

do NOT turn ur steering wheel to limit over 10sec...
next time, try turning the steering wheel to it's limit, you will hear a annoying sound comming from the engine bay, that sound is from the joint. for bigger cars like van or truck, it's harmful to turn the steering wheel to the limit over 10secs or more, the power steering oil will overheat...

and i think we all know wut comes next after long time of overheat...

WTF is power steering for then? I know that while a car w/out power steering is in motion, it's easy to steer the car. At a dead stop, good luck.

Don't do it ever or at least as possible. Just comes with normal experience driving. Just 1 rule of thumb for driving any car.
