Celica Forums General Discussion General Anyone else have this problem?

Basically ever since I bought my car (3 years ago) I have been having this problem. My brakes squeak when im in reverse. Lately the problem seems to be getting worse, I've called and made an apointment with the shop that I always go to and have them check it out. I was just wondering if this is common, or if my car is a freak

Your car isn't a freak of nature. Probably just the brake pads or something.

Very common. How many miles on your brakes? I hate to tell U this out of anybody here other than the other Moderators or Administration, but what about the search feature? I myself had posted info on brakes before as others. It's normal but it wouldn't hurt to get your rotors and pads checked anyway say at a scheduled service like 30,000 miles or 60,000 miles or at a normal oil change if U express concern (only under warranty in that case) otherwise the dealer might charge U that mystery $80-$90 fee for checking.

U can even check them yourself...just jack up the car & remove the wheel. not too hard.

I didn't mean to sound like a smart ass. They should have inspected your brakes at the 30,000 mile check up. If you are really concerned and it sounds like you are under warranty, take it back or to another dealer and demand to have it checked and/or fixed under warranty. U could take it to a mechanic U trust, but that costs money and will probably say the same. Please do a search and see if that relates to your problems and let us know either way. I ramble too much and are too lazy tonight to get this info I hoped for someone else to come thru

funny..anyway mine have done the same...i figured since my pads and rotors were fine, and i can tell its not comming from the rear brakes its minor thing and a light shot of brake cleaner works for a litile while

yeah i notice this too, my brakes squeal bad in reverse, joey has this prob too and so does another guy at my school, we all have a GT and have this prob. i think that it may be common and not a threat just makes the car sound bad. i'd like to get rid of this prob too but it seems there is no real permanent solution to this squealing, it may be the drums.

i had my friend reverse my car as i got close to listen where the sound came from and didn't come from the rear, you know how there is a TSB for the clicking in the brakes, well i think the squeal shims and resulting noise may be the culprit whem the pads shift and make the clicking noise

My car is no longer covered under a warranty (im about 1k miles over ) and the noise is coming from the front of my car. I don't think its something really bad, but I just don't like the noise. I hate hearing it and I especially hate when others can hear it...you know you would just expect to hear nasty noises coming from pos cars and older ones, not a 01' celica.

Oh...and the reason that I don't go to Toyota is quite frankly my family doesn't trust them. They really are a rip off (atleast the one near my house) and they never tell you the truth. We go to this family owned shop and have been taking all of our cars there for years.

My brakes don't squeek but when I apply my brakes they make a "whoop whoop whoop" noise until I completely stop. I've never of any car making that noise...I'm assuming they're my brakes since I only hear it when I slow down to a stop.

Might want to check into having your rotors resurfaced.

Thats the only thing that I can think of for your problem.

time to get them resurfaced, and maybe some new pads!

Also, it could just be the rust coming off, if it only happens when you first back up.

yeah..only squeeking when you back up is a little odd. maybe the angle is a bit off on the pads?

most cars especially with semi-metallic brake pads tends to squeek at a certain point, cause of the content of the brake linings itself when manufactured metallic components tends to sink at the bottom thats why you only hear a high pitched squeeking noise when you get a certain mileage on your brake pads. not sure though if celi's use semi-mettalic, ehehehe. or it could just be your rotors, but never had mine resurfaced and i already have close to 70k.

well if it was your rotors..it definately wouldnt be just when you back up.

when your rotors are exposed and you brake...it'll make a definitive grinding noise that you just know can't be good...and definately not cheap to replace.

mines like that also. everytime I start my car in the morning and I back up, it ALWAYS squeeeks (its embarassing sometimes) ... but then after a few miles it goes away

My car does this too, and only in reverse. It only does it first thing in the morning when it's cold outside and when I back out of my garage. It seems that as the car and pads warm up, the squeaking goes away, and it only happens in reverse too. Might be moisture on the rotors too. Who the hell knows.

Jesus loves brakes, so he should love them with all of the mercy that he loves mufflers with.

Is it coming from the backs or fronts?

I'm not too familiar with drum brakes but the front brakes could use some brake grease in between the 2 anti-squeal shims. It solved my reverse squeak

My 2003 has brake noise when I am in reverse. Some brake noise is normal. I mean its a surface to surface contact under friction. My guesses are: break wear indicator, metal to metal contact, or just the vibration caused by the pad contacting the rotor and being transferred into noise.

if it is your brake wear indicator you would hear a constant squeeking noise everytime brakes are applied unless for some odd reason the indicator is bent forward farther than it should have been, and if you have a brake pad vibration problem you wouldnt be able to feel this until about above 30mph and brakes are applied. i could be wrong though

i've had this problem a lil whiles ago, i just changed my brake pads and no more squeeking!

my brakes have also been doing this since day 1... always in reverse and never while driving forward

with and without condensation (or rust)... but 55k miles later, and they still do that same noise you are talking about cp

At 3,000mi on the car, I asked Toyota service department about the cracks in my rotors - and they told me not to worry about them, "this is normal on all semi-metallic rotors" - the dealership told me to go take a walk around their lot and inspect the rest of their Celica - to my surprise, there were several others that showed these same "cracks"

Renee... do you have these same cracks on your rotors? could it be that the rotors are warped when we backup and the noise is actually coming from the scraping of these cracks in reverse??? (smooth one way, rough 'dips' the other way)

I don't know if I have that problem...I'll have to check that out with my dad tomorrow.
