I THINK I have a light out in my headlights. When I arm the alarm, both headlights are on. When I turn on the lights, both headlights are on, but when I put the key in the ignition without the car running and turn on the lights, only the left headlight comes on. How many bulbs are in the headlights anyway?
On a somewhat similar note, I notice one of my fog lights was out... until I got down there and wiggled it. wtf.
the light that blink when you hit the alarm are the parking lights they are totally different from you headlight. So you probably do have a light out. And in your fogs the bulb may be loose or the wiring is loose.
The actual headlamp bulbs are not out, but it looks like there's a bulb down in the bottom near the front that comes on when you turn your lights on. It's more noticeble if you turn the lights on one notch with no key in the ignition. The headlamps won't turn on at this point, but there's bulbs down below that do. So there must be at least 3 bulbs in the headlight...
you could do it yourself. order the MTECs off this site and change out all the bulbs for a better look. Just remember not to touch the bulbs with your bare hands. The oil from your skin shortens the life.
If you open your hood...You will see that's it's very easy to replace yourself. Only a couple minutes time! I did all of mine myself(MTEC hyper white bulbs all around the exterior of my car-reverse, turn signal front & back) Hardest are the fog lights
This is one of the comments under the lighting section in the EStore...
"I couldn't afford HID's so I decided to go with these lights instead. I am AMAZED at the difference! The lights are extremely white and allow for excellent visibility at night. I definitely recommend these lights for ANY Celica owner. Only thing missing in this package are the replacement bulbs for the DRL's "
You can get the entire MTEC package from here for $90 I think. Includes DRL, low beam & fogs! Good deal. You can also purchase the clear corners from here. If you do, I suggest getting hyper white wedge bulbs for them & also the wedges for the 3rd bulb in the headlight housing. You can even get hyper white bulbs for the turn signal. I actually got blue ones-illegal though. I also did the blinker mod for both the windshield washer lights & side markers.
Awesome... so I'd have to get the $90 package in order to get the replacement bulb that's out in my car (the 3rd bulb in the headlight... which would be one of the wedge bulbs).
Nope. The wedge bulbs you need to purchase separately. The MTEC package includes the fogs, low beam(the regular headlights that are on at night), & the DRL/high beam bulbs(the ones that turn on automatically in the daytime). The wedges are the small ones to the side of the DRL's. I'll post a pic in a few.
Hold on a sec... I think there's still some confusion about the lights...
When you turn your lights on, there are TWO bulbs that are active in the headlight housing. Which two are those? Because my right headlight only has one bulb active (the main lamp). Btw, I'm parked in the garage. Hmm how does a manual transmission know you're "parked" anyway? Parking brake? Meaning... one of the lights might be the parking light.
That would help but I haven't recieved my digicam from ebay yet so I'll tell you like this...the headlight is on top, the DRL/high beam is directly below it, the wedge is to the side. At the very bottom is the turn signal(closest to the bumper). From what we've talked about it sounds like your wedge has a malfunction. I just have a camera phone right now so if I take the pic outside at night it won't show well & I don't know how to actually write on pictures...hope this helps.
Thanks for the help... I'm probably hitting the bed soon... I'll mess with it tomorrow and try the high beams, DRL, blinkers etc so I can narrow down which light is out. From your description, it sounds like it's the DRL / High beams because it's the light that's down below the headlight in the center. The bulb is actually facing the back of the car.
WAIT if you get the full lighting package it comes with a piar of the wedge bulb, the blue blinkers, and MTECs for high/lows and fogs. See for yourself in the store.
Ok... I got up this morning and checked things out. I discovered that I'm dumb and easily fool by reflections. The reflection of the bulb that's on the SIDE is so clear it made me thing it was down in the BOTTOM of the headlight.
Anyway, it's the bulb that's on the side that is out (the wedge) like you suggested before.
I took a closer look at all the lights, and the How-To replace guide makes things seem a lot easier than it really appears to be. For example, I'm not sure I could fit my hand behind the light enough to pull out the high beam / low beam bulbs. I haven't tried it, so maybe there's some trick or it just LOOKS hard.
I just called my Toyota dealer for a replacement bulb for my one of my low beams and I mentioned the MTEC H7 Super White and he told me to be careful because they might not be legal in all states and it could fail inspection. Is he on the up-and-up or is he just trying to get my business (note: he did lower his price sufficiently after I mentioned that I was shopping on the Internet)?
2nd question - are there any operating heat issues with the MTEC?
