cams are the things that push down the intake and exhaust valves...
thats the simple version of what they do.
and yes they can add upwards of 20hp if they were machined properly and there was room for improvement over stock.

i don't think you would need them for the GTS.. the cam timing and lift are already super aggressive. well maybe an exhaust cam mod would help

Build the rest of your engine up. Get stiffer valve springs and forge your block and crank to heavier standards. Then get some Darkin sleeves if they make them, then check Toda for some cams for the 2ZZ-CE.Get some timer pulleys from AEM and overlap the valve timing ever so slighty. NA power is the way to go if you want power though the entire powerband.

Also because of the physical characteristics of the lobes, they're made out of 2 metals or whatnot. They're not your average cam shaft. the reason so many companies are having trouble designing cams for the 2zz is because toyota made em damn near perfect.

This may be off the topic, but what about the engine that was originally for Christian Rado the same as ours (GTS) before the switch to the Tundra engine I believe. There were plans for some nice titanium engine parts and they had them. If I remember they said our engine could hold up to at least 500 HP w/out the lift engaged for turbo drag reasons. I'm sure they had custom cams from TRD. Where are the specs for that engine? What about a tuned down version of that? Anybody know what I'm talking about? I know the cost would be tremendous.

what I'd like to know is - Is it really worth the hassle to get cams and pistons for a GT?

what I'd like to know is - Is it really worth the hassle to get cams and pistons for a GT? NA cams & pistons - no cams and pistons for a FI application - yes why spend like 2-3 grand on a GT to make 160whp? you could just get a GTS but if you plan on going FI then there is reason to do internals.
