Celica Forums General Discussion General RELUSTS FROM EXHAUST NOISE TEST...IT'S NOT OVER YET!

well guys i'm back from probably one of the biggest hassles anyone has to endure. so here goes. i just went to the state referee and he used this small device and put it right next to the exhaust...the guy rev'ed it at 5,700 rpm (but i swear i heard lift engage) and my decible reading were----96.8,97.5,96.5...so i thought "oh great...now i'm screwed since the limit is 95db". turns out that there is a +/- 1.5 db tolerance and so i passed at 96.5. awesome. i took it to the chp to get the ticket signed off...at first they gave me a hard time saying that at 96.5 it didn't pass...so i showed them my paper work and my certificate and once they listened to the exhaust (with no device just their ears) they signed off on the ticket...i'm out of the woods right? WRONG!...i go the clerk's desk over at the court house and it turns out that i am not supposed to just mail the certificate proving that it is legal I HAVE TO SHOW UP IN COURT NO MATTER WHAT or pay the fine. this is bull**** because the cop who pulled me over told me all i had to do was comply that the exhaust was legal and that if i didn't want to appear in court all i had to do was mail the damn thing! i travelled an excess of 50 miles alone going back and forth from the referee station to the chp to the court house. this is friggin' ridiculous!!! i have complied will all the "rules" and jumped through all the hoops to make these queers happy and now they tell me i can't just go and get hassled to have to go to court??? BULL****!!!!!!! i'm so pissed right now. i have no faith in this justice system at all...

Though a lot of cops are actually nice, there are a lot of asses out there that cause a bad rep for police. Not all of them are trying to get a quota or harasse aftermarket cars. Those that do so are dumb and shouldnt be police.

oh for sure...i'm going to fight this. i'm going to tell the judge exactly what happened. i was not at fault for purchasing and using a legal exhaust and i am not at fault for being tested (TWICE!!) and pass and still not get dissmissed...i have jumped though all the hoops and they cannot tell me i'm in the wrong. if they do and the judge pulls in favor of having my exhaust modified i'll take more serious action...this process i have endured is unjust, it's harrassment, and totally un-warranted. again, i don't pay taxes for cops to pull people over with legal exhausts...

its a list DIRECTLY from Toyota that shows that the exhaust with "PART NUMBER" is actually an available option from the dealership, to be used with optional aero-body style "Action Package"

Meaning.. its an OPTION available at the time of automobile purchase that is recommended for a particular street-legal vehicle design... a design that has no difference from any other vehicle of its class on the sales lot other than the addition of a few body ground effects - appearance only

ct - during your next trip to ANY toyota dealership, ask for a copy of the TRD catalog page that lists the TRD exhaust for Toyota Celica... (or even the free brochure). In that publication it is written "Emissions legal in all 50 states and meets DOT 95dB noise requirements."

Although the court can always say that the volume may change during the life of the part - or that the addition/modification of other parts (such as adding an Intake) may modify the sound results... you can always reply back that you purchased the exhaust for your vehicle with the impression and under the intention that you would be completely legal using this higher costing full exhaust system ($500) as apposed to a less expensive $100 exhaust system that does no come with the same certifications.

hopefully everything goes well and this whole procedure i went through becomes a blueprint for anyone who was un-justly dragged to court for a legal exhaust.

just an update...i talked to a guy at TRD from orange county and he said he will mail me all the test results trd did, lus all chp bulletins that confirm my legality, and documents from sema to help prove my case. he's actually looking out for me to try to get myself out of the court hearing and get it dismissed...wow...TRD is really lookin'out...

ct you know all of us are behind you 100% so best of luck 2 u. i hope TRD can help you out avoiding the court but if you have to go(and you prolly know this already) dont forget the fact how they condcted the testing you know they where suppose to test it from 20 ft away and only up to 3000 rpm which they didnt(bastards)also if you can try to contact SEMA and ask the "actual procedures" for testing it and try to get it documented

just to update you guys...


i ust got the information package from trd. included are:

-a record of conversation between the trd official and the chp on sae testing standards and procedures. stating that the engine be reved at 3-5K rpm...as stated i was tested at a very high 5700rpm @ 96.5db with a barely pass status...had i been tested at 3-5K i would have past with flying colors.

-a revised trd certificate saying that the exhaust has met rigorous testing requirements as per sae requirements.

-a chart of gts testing db per rpm. it clearly shows a 88-90db at or between 3-5K rpm...a max 5775 rpm was tested at 93db...(but who drives around at 5775 rpms??? unless you're racing??)...

chp bulletins on how to adress issue as a correctible violation. so appearance in court should be nullified if ticket has been stamped with corrected violation stamp (which mine was)

-SEMA bulletins on how testing procedures went about...
