I have a gt. I'm no expert, but to me the real significant difference is in performance. If you really want high performance, go with the gts. If you're more concerned about looks, it may not be worth the price difference to you. That's my $.02

They are making more aftermarket performance parts for the GTS. For example superchargers and turbos are being made for the GTS, the GTS also has more of a variety of parts. But the parts are more expensive than GT parts. An example of this is the header. The GTS has I trhink 3 options, and they are all around $800. The GT has only one option and it is $350 give or take. Depends where you buy from. Seems to me though that GTS owners have more mechanical problems than the GT. Hope this helps.

it really depends on what youre planning to do with the car. if you want looks only, GT. if you want a relativley fast stock car, GTS. if you want to add turbo, GT. GT's have a lower compression ratio than the GTS. also if you wanna go all out and add a mr turbo engine, get GT i have a GTS and im going with an inbetween medium. half and half with looks and performance. i dont think ill be adding forced induction but i want a few engine mods. if i do anything dramatic, it will be adding nitrous. hope this helps. oh one more thing. whenever i see a celica on the road, even if it looks nice, i check to see if its gt or gts. if the emblems are gone its obviously a gt. i just dont give as much props to a gt as i do to a gts. gts' are rare where i live. only like 3 ive seen other than mine. Isn't better to install a turbo on a GTS than on a GT since it's 40+ faster and plus the 6spd trans.

I'll try to make it simple... Get a GT if you want you pay less when getting the car. -for modding looks -for decent performance, but to still put on exhaust and intake and headers -if you plan to put a turbo on it, then GT since the compression is much lower than the GTS. -if TRD is making supercharger for it, cause I think they are for that engine, I'm not sure
GTS is you have the money to buy it since it's more -for modding looks -for 180 hp of VVTL-i power -for exhaust, intake, headers also -NOT for turbo because compression is too high and don't take a risk of getting it installed -supercharger IF toyota is making it for this engine, cause I don't know which engine it is for.
I think the main difference is first based on price of the car, figure that out. Then you can probably get it from there.

as you can see i made the choice for the GTS its all about the 6 speed the better rims more hp, and all that crap about the GT has lower whatever, whatever thats what doesnt make a difference if you have the money get the GTS. you can get cheaper parts for the GTS too. its all about what the people have that are replying if they have a GT they are like get a GT...and like me im like the GTS.im the same as the other kid i give more respect when i see GTS even if the GT has a bunch done to it,im like if you were gonna do that much y didnt you get the GTS too? (dont answer that people with GT ive already heard ur side) my advice also, test drive them...then pick the one you like more.then look for the cost of parts u'd get on your own. dont take our word for it.

Get a GTS.
I have a GTS, and my father has a GT. His car is NICE, and so is mine.
But it's all about lift baby.

When I bought the Celica, the GTS was about $4000 more. I bought the GT and since spent close to $8000 on aftermarket stuffs. So, it is not about what you can afford, at least not in all cases.
Mike Lu has a GT. I am sure he could've bought a GTS becaue he has spend at least $10000+ on mods including a custom turbo that would blow the doors off of any stock GTS.
There are many different criterias we use to determine which car we should get. That's why Toyota manufactures two trim levels to suit the different markets. My recommendation is to buy the car that best suit YOUR individual needs. To say the GTS is better than GT (or vice versa) or stick is better than automatic is ridiculous. Otherwise, all Celicas would be GTS with 6-speed. [ 04-29-2003, 01:46 PM: Message edited by: tony ]

Yeah, test drive both. You can do anything to either car with the money. I still believe appearence is for GT and performance GTS, but that's just MY 2cents.
Also, Mike Lu may have a bad ass turbo GT, but if you see dynos of GTS turbos, they're huge! Take XS for example: about 80 hp gain. A GT will be lucky to see 60 hp. But then again, it depends on the turbo, intercooler, etc. Just test drive and research them both. That's what I did.
I have yet another long winded post.

back to topic.. no question, unless you have the money to turbo, get the GTS, if it's in your budget though I would get the GT and immediatly turbo it with Dave Draper's kit coming out in 2 months, you would be 200hp at the wheels and dust any NA GTS (150hp at the wheels stock) and when all is said and done, will have speant less money than purchasing a stock GTS..

i guess the tension between gt and gts owners is stronger than i thought because you guys are really pissing me off. awdturbo, ur not exactly the brightest bulb on the tree. i have a gt and im not going to get beat by a saturn or grocery getters. i don't see how you can like celicas so much but not have any respect for the gt model. the other day i raced a 95 prelude si. with my bald tires and all and stock car cept my custom cat back and reasonator removed, and his intake, lack of cat, custom catback, ground wires, and new front tires, i only lost by a fender. he prolly had 30 more hp than me... am i a good driver? i like to think im good. either way i know that i only lost by that much because of the great efficient engine celicas have. i guess the moral of my story is its fine to say the gts is faster, it has 40 more hp, but don't say get the gts because the gt sucks... I agree with jeremy.
The GT is a GREAT car. My father owns a 2002 GT and I have a 2000 GTS. While his car might not be as fast as mine, he gets a constant 32 MPG whilst I get 24 (28 if I drive like an old woman)
Thats a big difference, considering the cost of gas here in MD.
Also, GTS insurance is higher.
If you want a more economical car, get a gt. If you want lift, get a gts.
Don't let anyone here tell you what to do, just read the info, test drive both, and make your decision.

I seem to only respect the 'top models' of a vehicle a car company comes out with. The GTS is the 'top model' celica. Thats great your GT is efficiant, so is the GTS, I bought the celica for my commuter car and it steadily gets 29 MPG. Various grocery getters that will bring the fury on your GT! the mid-level dodge neon now comes with 150 HP stock. although some may consider this a sports car, I consider it a grocery getter. The mazda6 has got 160HP or 220HP. oh, even the maxima is coming with 265 HP(yes it does weigh). The new VW jetta has a 180HP model and a 200HP model. The new saturn ION has got 140HP, the same as your Celica GT, it may beat you it may not, but it will sure as hell give you a run for your money. It would be one of those races where YOU wipe the sweat off your forehead thinking, "dam that was close, I'd hate to have lost to that grocery getter." Enjoy those times Jeremy, im sure their will be plenty of them. Now I don't mean to step on any GT owners toe's they are nice economy cars! [ 05-01-2003, 09:30 PM: Message edited by: awdturbo ]

Look.. I have a GT, and I know the GTS is better STOCK (that's why they are more expensive), if you don't want to mod your car just buy it and forget about it, I think a GTS is a smart buy, (although honestly, driving them, I prefer the '00+ GT eclipe and the RSXtypeS, both cheaper cars than a GTS stock, both of them are around 200hp and both have a much better low end, ESPECIALLY the '00+ eclipse, trust me I had one for 3 years).. however if you plan to do aftermarket mods, then I think a Celica GT is a better buy than all of them because of a few things.
1. NA parts cost (much cheaper on a GT) 2. Turbo cost (once the kits come out this summer, will be much cheaper on at GT because of the stock compression) 3. Looks IDENTICAL to the GTS 4. Take the money you saved, put it into aftermarket mods, and you have a better car (this is WHY a turbo or supercharged GT will more than likely replace the VVTL-i engine in the higher model celica within the next year or 2, because the GTS is losing out to the RSXtypeS and the Eclipse, because of the price tag.
I am not trying to be insulting, I am just trying to explain why I, who could have easily afforded a GTS, purchased a GT and chose to put that 8K (Canadian) I saved INTO the GT.. so now, for less than the cost of a GTS by the end of this summer I will have a 235hp (200whp) 2003 Celica GT Turbo, with rims, red accent suede seats, TRD shifter, TRD steering wheel, TRD body kit, exhaust, 2 10" audiobahns, and a 300w JBL amp. Just my 2c.. take it for what it's worth. [ 05-01-2003, 10:27 PM: Message edited by: FX-MAN ]

I'll just say that I have a GT. I got it for LOOKS, I really don't care about going fast in my car. So you have a faster car than me ... whoopdee-do, Good for you. One of the reasons I got a GT is for the eventual introduction of a S/C or T/C. Plus in the mean time insurence is also cheaper which is good. For the time being if I want to go blow some doors off than what do you think I'm gonna be driving. Hint, take a look in my sig.
