Just wondering how many people do not know how to drive a manual or are not very good at driving one yet?

Me I am practicing...I use to kinda practice a long time ago but stoped when i bought my celi which was an auto..now i am trying to learn how again..my problem is getting to nervous to get on the actual road.

Try hitting the side streets, and then the highway early some Sunday morning.

Its okay to be nervous, find a private place to practice. I had a hard time learning how to start on an incline. Kept spinning my tires. I was practicing in a church parking lot one night and almost had the cops called me because someone said they saw a suspicious looking car circling the building. grin

I only drive a stick about once or twice a month, but I'm pretty good at it. I'm not ultra-smooth... but then again, I'm not very smooth in my auto either. I think that it's more fun to "feel" the driving experience. laughsilly

you all are gonna kick my ass for this one but...
when it cam to purchasing a celica
it came down to 2 cars
a red gts 2000 w/ 37000 miles for about 14,500
or a red gt 2001 w/ 26000 miles for about 13,000
the main reason i picked my gt was because it was an auto
my main message is, if you realllllllly wanna go fast learn to drive a stick

Theres my 2 cents wave

dont over analyze. you arent gonna get good by thinking "ok, now i gotta clutch and give it some gas"

imo driving careful is harder then just going at it in a manual

remember that if you stall too much that you're not giving enuf gas. also remember that you gotta let off the clutch or you wont go anywhere.

i dunno . . . just practice.

its just like learning to ride a bike grin, practice makes perfect.. try practicing on an empty lot like the school parking lot or any business parking lot on a weekend, then after getting used to it for a couple of days try driving on side streets, when you're really comfortable driving then you wanna hit the freeways, just have to be patient, you'll get there thumbsup

You'll pick it up, use the engine sound and tach (not at first gear, just generally speaking). Once you have it down, you won't even have to think, look at the tach or even listen to the engine. It'll take a couple of weeks to have it down if not months to have a smooth ride. Good luck!

yea..out of all the manual cars i've driven, about 5...i think the celica is the hardest for me to drive and took me the longest to get use to, besides when i first got into a car...might be because this is the fist sports car i've ever drivin...and i am still taking it out, i try not to make the car jumpy...i can drive it pretty smooth now, but i get off slow as hell! haha...i havent dared to try a incline yet with traffic, i went to a pretty steep incline and i got it on the second try...but that's the only incline i ever took on my celica...but this car is fun 2 drive once i got use to it!

I learned how to drive on a manual and I've only driven a manual and I think I'll only drive a manual! Unless for some reason I move into the bigger city where it's hectic and I am forced to drive in rush hour traffic every single day.. and if so, then maybe I'll consider an auto, and since Mercedes have all but two cars in auto I think have a Benz would be a fun idea wink .. oh and then I could be a brainless, stuck-up, rich yuppie rofl

nope, not true at all, in fact the first auto tranny cars were offered as a convenience for the average buyer, just like power steering and AC.

In fact the first automatics didn't have shift knobs, they had buttons on the dash to select reverse, neutral, drive, 1st and 2nd gear. It was way cool (I've seen a couple old cars with this, it was a slick idea!) Problem is, a lot of people went to hit the preset buttons on their radio back then, and the gear selector's buttons looked a LOT like the radio buttons, and they were also placed just above the radio. wouldn't you know it, some poor schmuck would go to change the rtadio station and accidentally press reverse, next thing you know, the person steps on the gas when the light would turn green, and end up smashing the guy behind him. very funny, and yes, very true.

since then, the gear selector has either been a lever in the center console or on the steering column.

That has happened to me a couple times! One time I had to drive my girl to Walmart in her car. I kept working the brake like the clutch. spineyes

I think it is very easy to drive with a stick... I have had a couple of cars with automatic transmission... so I have tried both types of transmission - and I like the manual best... You are always in control of which gear you are in...

And by the way, in Denmark (Europe/Scandinavia) the Celica only comes with a 6 speed manual transmission regardless of engine type...

And I think a 6 speed manual is more fun than a 4 speed automatic...

I drove an automatic for 4 years, then I bought my Celica GTS with a manual transmission. I actually drove it home from the dealership on the interstate eek I sucked so bad...but I got her home safely.
Now I drive her with hardly any problems at all and I LOVE driving a stick. It just takes practice. Don't get frustrated if you stall it, I still stall it occasionally.

Practice makes perfect. when I was learning how to drive manual, the first gear was the hardest, but after a weak, I had it nail.. Now I drive my GTS really well.. is like you become one with the car, and before you know it, you will changing gears without even noticing.. thumbsup Keep practicing and don't be afraid.. thumbsup wave
