hey guys, i drive a 00 toyota celica gts sports-shift and i have an HKS Hiper Axle Back Exhaust System. Anyway my resonator went down the drain when i blew two holes in it, not on purpose, anyway the guy gave me 2 choices.. i could either replace the resonator or just put in a pipe instead of the resonator. Well my exhaust is really quiet and you can't hear it at all so he took my resonator off and now the car sounds really nice. I'll admit that sometimes it might seem a little loud but it's not in a bad way. Anyway i'm happy with it. The problem is i'm afraid i might have lost some power. I know that the resonator has nothing to do with power but it does have stuff to do with flow. Just so i can sleep better tonight someone please enlighten me. Did i screw up with removing resonator? will it damage my car? Will it add or take away power, or stay the same? I would really appreciate any help on this and as you can see i don't know much about the technical stuff, thanks guys...

removing the resonator should of added a little bit of power...reason being is that the best muffler is no muffler at all, so the less restrictions the better.

you are not going to hurt your car, dont worry

Give it a little time. When I custom did mine, I feel that I lost power.

this is a very common misconception.. in SOME cars removing the resonator will add power (especially with FI, you need your exhaust as free as possible).. so ONLY in cars with an exhaust bottleneck.. the key to power is ballancing intake with air out so your engine doesn't have to work to suck air in or push it out.. , so if you don't have FI or nitrous, then removing the resonator can reduce backpressure and the air flows right through your engine instead of sticking around to fuel the spark. (especially if you already have a free flowing exhaust). so yes, you could have lost power.. Everyone I know who has removed the resonator has said the same thing (do you agree Dan? You did this and lost some power also right? plus I know a few guys up here in Van with the same problem).

see now i read somewhere that the backpressure idea is just the myth and a bunch of bs <img src=" title="" src="graemlins/bs.gif" /> ... not to say you are wrong.

Basicly, It said that engines don't need any backpressure to run and the best exahust would be no exhaust at all ... ohhh where did i read that confused

Yea, I agree with FXMAN. I do not know what the cause of my loss of power is from, or how to get it back. But since I will probably get the turbo in the next year, I am not worried about it.

i would think that just adding an intake would solve ur problem... if you are fearing not enought backpressure, GET MORE AIR! wouldn't that work?

I have CAI, and header and Hi-Flow cat. Maybe my problem was with the cat. Maybe its with my muffler(too big). Maybe its the 2.5" piping with no resonator. Since I have finals next week, I haven't had time to play with it, but I will try and figure it all out when I'm done with finals.

theres your problem dan, 2.5 in. piping. too big like you said, but its going to be perfect for when you get your turbo. so if you can deal with having less power right now then do so. i wouldn't think ud want to replace ur whole piping again anyways.

yea you guys make a lot of sense... i do not know exactly my pipe size but i think it's 2 1/4 or 2.5... anyway i don't feel too much power loss actually i don't feel power loss at all maybe that's just cause the exhaust is louder so i think i'm supposed to go faster or something... but i am gona go out and compare my celica to other celicas in my club... i'm prolly doing it this saturday so i'll let you guys know how i do...
