"if your vvt control valve filter is dirty lift will engage much later like 6400 - 6500. I had this happen to me. cleaned the filter and it dropped back down."-Mike "Lucky" i got this quote from mike aka Lucky here in ecelica. the quote was from NC. i have noticed my lift kicks at 6400-6500 rpm. how do i clean the vvt control valve filter?

so many things you gotta do to maintain the celica and all the dealer says is to keep bringing it back and they'll change the oil and rotate the tires every 5k miles...i think

once you remove it you'll see a tiny filter inside. if ti doesnt fall right out just use your finger to slide it out. It's a metal mesh so no need to replace it. simply spray it down with some brake cleaner and you're good to go. What happens is tiny particulates can get stuck in the mesh over time and it can cause lift to kick on late and if it gets really bad it can cause similar problems to a broken lift bolt. removing it is fairly easy. should be less then an hour even taking your time. Best thing to do is remove the battery first. after that its a couple wire harnesses and bolts and it'll come right off. easier then installing a CAI

hey mike..i did the lift bolts today (god...what a bitch...lol) but i can't seem to remove the vvti control valve filter...so if you're free on the 26th, lets do it! BTW-let this be a lesson to all GTS'ers. REPLACE YOUR LIFT BOLTS EVERY 10K!!!. i had mine replaced 10k ago and when i took them out today they were strpped (and i only go into lift occasionaly).

I realy appreciate the write up. I'm going to do this soon no question about that. Thanks again and have Happy Holidays and a Merry X-Mas.
By the way, your lift bolts don't need to be replaced every 10,000, 15,000, or even 30,000 miles. It's not an oil change. They will last a long time even hitting lift day in and day out. No need to worry about those. I remember when people said adjust your throttle cable ever 15,000-30,000 miles. That is your saviour. Adjust the throttle cable was everyone's reply and get some AEM pulleys and ground wires to boot. No one ever thought about the later year Celica's and DBW and similar problems. Damn, that went bye bye quick.
Thanks, again for the write up. Much appreciated twice over. I owe you.

By the way, your lift bolts don't need to be replaced every 10,000, 15,000, or even 30,000 miles. . from the looks of my bolts which i changed only 10K ago they look like they were ready to go in a few thousand more miles. they finish of the bolt was completely stripped and you can see the overall width has been shortened due to wear. again i only hit lift 2-3 times a week.

FYI- i just took her out today for a canyon run (and had the pleasant oppurtunity to run with a LOTUS ELISE!!!..which didn't last long...lol) and LIFT KICKS IN EARLIER. remember i posted a while back that my lift was kicking in at 6500...now it's back down to 6100-6200 and feels much SMOOTHER. even though i never got the oppurtunity to clean my vvti control valve filter i was able to change the lift bolts and clean the throttle body and PCV valve with my trusty mafs cleaner aka 'Valvoline Choke and Throttle body cleaner' . the car feels very right...i definately recommend spending an hour of your time and doing this
