Has anyone taken their car to a Toyota Dealership to get some synchro problems fixed? My car grinds whenever I downshift from 5th gear to 4th gear and 3rd gear to 2nd gear, so I wanted to take it in. I was just wondering how long it takes, and if they supply me with a complimentary car or something. Thanks

Should take them 4 day at the most because they have to order the part. Make sure you get a rental car from them...If not they may take forever because there is no need to rush..get it!!!! last time I take my car in for grinds gear, it take them like 3 week...I was sooo mad and decided to get a rental car from them. 2 day after that they call me.

Did you guys actually drive your car with someone from the dealer next to you, or did you just leave your car there?

My car was grinding from 5th to 4th, like yours. I drove it to Toyota and I had a guy drive it alone. He knew it was a synchro problem so it was covered under warranty. I did get a rental from them, and I think they told me that my warranty will only cover like 4 days or so, but the tech guy gave me a break and told me that He will make Toyota cover if I go over 4 days. After about 7 days my car was ready. The tech guy knows me and my car really well now.

My car grind from 6th to 5th... I brought it in and they say they're not sure what the problem was... they told me if they open up the transmission and find out that the car has been raced I will have to pay like $1,200 for labor plus the part needed. otherwise it will be covered under the powertrain warranty. I was like WTF??? So my car still grind until now... what should I do? sounds like BS to me...

I was told that too. they needed approval from me to tear it apart which would cost me like $300 and if warranty didn't cover it I had to pay about +$1K too. I too was loke WTF? The guy said that he was pretty sure it would be covered, but he would have no liability if it wasn't. I was like F**k it. Tear it apart and fix it. I knew it wasn't my fault, so I gave the ok and they started working on it. But to answer your question, If I had the money to cover it, which I don't and at the time I would have used my VISA, which I had just recenlty paid off, I would go ahead and give them the ok to tear it down, which it would be covered under warranty. But it does sound like BS to me.

If you are grinding going into 2nd and 4th, it might not be synchros. 7th gen Celicas are equipped with cable shifters, and these cables will stretch out a bit as they age.

Are you serious? How can I tell the difference if it's my synchros or the cable shifters? And how would I be able to fix this issue, because either way I don't like it grinding like that. Thanks

I doubt that your 7th gen has enough miles on it to have eaten the 2nd and 4th gear synchros already unless you're pretty unkind to it.
Are you under warranty? As the dealer to check for cable stretch. If not, have someone work the shifter while you check the ends of the cable on the transmission. You should be able to see if they have stretched (levers won't quite get into gear).
