Celica Forums General Discussion Exterior maybe some thing that might help reduce CEL caused by Intakes

Alright I have experimented a bit with the Intake I have and it calls for the VSV for the butterfly valve to remain electrically connected (blue connector) though absent any connection to a vacuum line.

I tried several configurations to "trick" VSV which I am sure has caused some CEL probs during the recent past and during my experimenting...I even tried to leave the VSV unconnected both electrically and through vacuum still a CEL.

Logically I thought if the VSV got a protected air supply from the stock airbox, why would this valve be left open to suck in dust and other contaminants that will clog it, like mine was as I found out during my testing.

So I referenced my part list for my old Supras' and found an answer to protect this $104 VSV and just maybe prevent CEL's caused by Intakes that have this electrically connected but not vacuum connected or not connected at all where the computer might see an open circuit and trigger a CEL, and if this has been done before my bad for a double post, but the part is a VTV Filter (Toyota P/N 90925-06006 @ $2.85 ea.) x3 for an 86.5 or 87 Supra NA or Turbo.

I am attaching pics of the part and how I put them on the Butterfly VSV. I have driven my Celica about 500mi witout a CEL something I never did before I had a problem with spark plugs (non related to Intake) and was forced to go back to stock for quite some time.

Maybe someone can find a generic filter of similar design to reduce the high price of Toyota's part.

does it give you better pedal response as with stock airbox? with Intake the tube are bigger and the pedal response lessen a lil..if it does i'm gonna have to try it out..

I haven't noticed any thing adverse as far as throttle response my Short Ram still functions normally, I just put these mini filters to keep crap out of the VSV which K&N says should be electrically connected but not to any vacuum lines, this VSV takes in a lot of stuff in cause it operates the butterfly in the stock air box

...and if you get bored try sucking on the inlet to get the butterfly on the stock air box to move on the stock airbox and you'll get an idea of what the VSV does and how it can easily be contaminated

I hope this clarifies what you are asking...basically preventative from having to replace a clogged VSV

ok..well i haven't gotten any CEL yet..so far so good for me..i've swictch from Intake back to stock and back to Intake ..like 3-4 times already but no problem..i'm just lucky i guess..my car been good to me so far, since the first 2wks of owning it the f*cking clutch burn out, now all is good.. ..

well if ur experiment work for one more person, mayb that'll be the solution to everyone else with CEL due to Intake.

yeah i dont get it some ppl have no prob with Intakes or with this VSV connected electrically or not but for me I figured I'd take some time and see how it all worked
