Hi, i've began to notice a weird noise coming from the engine when i start my car in the morning.(2000 gts manual) It sounds like squealing and it might be from a belt? It goes away within 7 seconds. I'd appreciate it if anyone can help me identify the cause and how i would go about repairing it!
Thanks so much,
RJ Holmes

some 2000 and 2001 celicas had bad belt tensioners that caused squealing sounds. bring it in to the dealer and let them look at it.

This is prolly a stupid question, but where is the belt located on a GTS?

I have the same problem. Just started a few weeks ago. When I turn the car on (after its been sitting for a while/overnight) I get a tiny squeeling noise. It goes away once the car is warmed up which is about 5 mins or so.

I will try this belt dressing stuff because I don't feel like paying toyota $100 to do the same thing!

belt dressing is only a temporary fix. Some tensioners WERE bad, nut most likely your belt just needs replaced. I just replaced mine a couple weeks ago with a Gatorback. $28 at Autozone. Prepare to take a couple hours to cahnge it tho. Its not difficult to do, but real hard getting access to the pulleys the belt threads thru. I scraped the crap out of my hands and arms!! Problem solved tho/ Also improved throttle response. thumbsup

I have a 2002 GT, it only has 11000 miles on it. Is this something that is honestly a warranty issue that can be replaced?

Nope. Belts are considered "wear items" and unless the tensioner is busted (good luck getting them to admit that) you're going to pay for it.

I paid $160 to have mine replaced a year ago, and it's doing it again.

What a joke rolleyes

but what I am trying to say is, I only have 11000 miles, would a belt need to be replaced that quickly? I never drive

Doesn't matter if you have only 1 mile. Wear items are not covered under any warranty. They include brake pads/rotors, belts, filters, tires (unless you have a warranty from the tire manufacturer or installer) and paint.

Having so few miles, most likely the tensioner is broken. Good luck getting them to replace it, I've tried MANY times, only to hear "you needed a new belt, $160 please"

nope, the sound is from the belt.

It's either the belt, or the tensioner. Since you've driven so little, it's most likely NOT just the belt, since most cars never have this problem even at 30K.

If it's really that annoying (mine does it, and I know it is) take it to Toyota and have them look at it. Maybe your belt is worn, and you will have to pay them to replace it. They should give you the new belt which has a sort of felt like feel to it to reduce the sound.

Or, you could buy a gatorback belt and have them install it for you thumbsup

DO NOT USE BELT DRESSING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did and it made things 10x worse, squeeling went to grinding. Goo all over the pulleys horrible slipping.

Do what I should have done in the first place, get it fixed by a shop. $38 for a new belt $60 for labor for cleaning the pulleys, new belt install and tensioner adjustment.

I was going to say the same thing until I saw this. That stuff is crap. Everyone's looking for a quick fix on this. A couple dollar spray and like magic it's fixed. I could swear that some of that stuff shouldn't be used on serpentine belts or drive belts anyways. It's either the tensioner, the belt, or both. Get it done right and most of the time the dealer doesn't know left from right.

So my best bet is to purchase the Gatorback and go to a Toyota dealership to replace and install it for me? Would they mind doing this even tho it is a diff. brand?
