hey i was wondering if Fiberglass really does chip when a rock or some kind of object hits it. Ive heard that this does occur but Urethane is so much more expensive. Is it a bad idea to go with Fiberglass? so if you guys could help me out i would appriciate it. thx
Fiberglass is perfectly fine, some prefer Urethane because they believe it's stronger which in some cases, it's true. Nonetheless, a majority of the people with body kits on the street have Fiberglass (ie. me) and have had no problems with it. And with chipping, that usually is just on the paint, Fiberglass doesn't chip that easily.
urethane will generally last longer than Fiberglass because it is more durable and resists cracking a LOT more than Fiberglass.
that said, only a few kits are made of Urethane...fiberglass is by far more widespread of the two.
Yea when i got rear-ended and it was pretty hard. Enough to rip out my radar detector of the cigarette lighter and throw it in the backseat and detach my subs from the wiring. My rear bumper didnt even crack. The paint had all pealed off cause it couldnt bend as far but the rear bumper popped back out perfectly. Even the guys at the bodyshop couldnt believe how well the bumper maintained itself.
it really depends on the quailty of the fiber glass. i've a body kit on the paseo, the front lip is f/g. it's a lot thicker than any fiber glass body kit that i've seen. it's been 2 years since i've that kit on. it has been through so many bumps and scraps, and it's still doing good...
i've heard a lot bad stories about veilside body kit cracking and such. a lot of kits are cheap, but at the same time they have lesser lays of fiber glass. all in all, i prefer Urethane, it's much more flexable to install...
you can also get a hybrid kit. i think VIS makes them. they mix Urethane with Fiberglass...so it's like FG, but it's flexible and won't crack as easily.
i chose Urethane because my car is dropped 2" and i know i'll be bumping things eventually.
only problem is that there aren't too many Urethane kits. off the top of my head i can think of kaminari, wingswest, molly, visage, rmm, and i think blitz&octane front airdams.
it is imperative that if you get a Fiberglass that you get the real deal name brand 'cause my friends have copies on their cars and they are chipping like hell...
