Celica Forums General Discussion Exterior Painting a body kit...

I've got a Kaminari kit waiting to be painted and installed and i've asked some shops how they paint the kits. Some shops say that i will have to repaint the whole car because it will be impossible to match the kit to the stock paint while others say that i just need to get the kit painted. What do you guys think?

u should only have to get the kit painted. the paint codes are on the frame of the car inside the door. paint shops take that code and use it to mix paint to get the color. the color wont be exact to what the color of your body, mostly because the paint on the body of your car has been in the sun and has prob faded some. you really wont notice the difference. eventually the paint will fade and look exact to the body. dont paint the whole car, gonna cost too much, just get the kit painted

silver actually shouldnt be that hard to match up to your current paint. you prob wont notice a diff. at all. i didnt when i had to get my sideskirt for my body kit repainted.

silver is actually one of the hardest to match. For the best results take in your paint code and the gas door off your vehicle. There are often variances in the paint codes and in the higher lines of automotive paint they will have multiple variances available of each code so that it is easier to match. For example the 98 neon has over 8 variances of white.

Take the gas door in and they can compare to it and you'll have the best results.

how much to install the body kit and re-paint the whole car???

that would definately vary from shop to shop.

an install and paint of just the kit should run you no more than $1,000...whereas painting the whole car could run anywhere from $2,000 +

i've been getting told it's only gonna cost about $500 to get the kit installed/painted

$500 for JUST paint...yes, that's about right, but to install and line everything up right will probably cost you a few hundred more

not true about matching the color, if you go to a quality body shop they'll just blend in certain areas. with that done you'll never be able to tell a color difference, though it might cost a couple hundred extra.

damn, that's a lot!!! i got my kit painted for $400, and install it myself (means free)...

so maybe I'm wrong...but I know that re-painting the entire car, and installing the kit, should easily be over $1,000...

^^^hey, not saying you're wrong, bodyshop prices range differently. it's just cheapier to install it by yourself...

$2000 for a full paint job sounds about right. there isn't a point to paint a full car for a bodykit. unless the car is 10yrs old and peeling like a bad sun burn...

I just learned this yesterday from my shop. Even if you have the same paint code and the correct mix, the kit will never match perfectly. They say that every pint has a different particle make up, which will change the color. The best way to cover mismatches is to have the car blended. It will cost alittle more, but the results are much better.
