Hopefully that helps. I had the same question. I guess expirmenting with an open header with b-pipe, and without the muffler would help. No it will not be the same speed. The Pipe length and diameter plays a role with gas velocities. Too big of a diameter and too short of a pipe length will decrease exhaust velocities. Too small of a diameter and pipe length too long will also decrease exhaust velocities. Depending upon the length of the collector pipe section of the header, running w/o a properly designed b-pipe will drastically decrease exhaust velocities and power.
Quote: On some dyno's I have seen open header runs and they have yielded higher gains than keeping the exhaust pipes on. Unless they didn't have the axle-back on and just kept the b-pipe.
The exhaust pipes were not properly designed...it did not let the exhaust gases reach proper velocity or the header had the proper collector pipe length and diameter to sustain the right exhaust velocity.

Gas velocity and direction has a big role in making power. What he is trying to say is, the less disruption in the diretion in the gas, the more power you make. Although, it may seem that leaving an open header you expect gains without having any backpressure or bottlenecks. I still yet to have figure this one out for myself, but I plan on making a trip to the track soon. Hope this helps.
