If my brake pedal goes down about one-third of the way before it actually starts braking (i.e. ~33% slack), is this bad or normal? Is there an easy way to tigten to brake pedal like I just did with the throttle cable (by following the guide )?

sounds like you need to bleed the breaks. there may be air in the break fluid.

The thing is, when the engine is off after you press the brake pedal a few times (until the vacuum braking wears off), the pedal becomes very tight. I can't even push it more than about half an inch. Does this help find what the problem could be?
Braking on the car is quite good otherwise.

it means you have no brakes? or ur leaking brake fluid? I still have brakes and I'm pretty sure I'm not leaking any fluid as it's been like this since I bought the car (3 months ago).
