Celica Forums General Discussion Engine and Performance Staying in lift?

I have a 2003 celica GTS with a 6-speed, and my friend has an 04 acura RSX-S. Now i dont have a problem, but he always says that celica's cant stay in lift when shifting from 1st to 2nd or any gear for the matter. Whats the deal with that, are some models not able to stay in lift like the 02'cause of the 7800 redline??

You can stay in lift in any gear when shifting up. 1st - 2nd can be hard at first. Personally on hills when the 1st - 2nd shift is harder as i engage the clutch in 2nd i almost slip it a little. That will do the trick. Just be careful in the wet as you'll just break into a unwanted wheel spin.

It's not good for your car (be warned) but say your going 40mph in 2nd and you want to overtake a car. Just drop the clutch down as you put down some power rip the clutch up and with the little bit of wheel spin you'll stay in lift all the way to redline. Again this won't work in the wet.

If you have a 02' ANYONE will have a serious problem staying in lift (Lower rev limiter). Furthermore, I belive that half teh people on this forum that say they land in lift are lying.

Maybe but I promise you I can do it 95% of the time.

i have an 02 and i can lad lift only if i have wheel spinn but i hate doing that to my clutch but i love lift and me wanting to stay in lift wins everytime.

i can too stay in lift while i shift and i have the vid to prove it damnit! Now after i perfected my 1-2 shift, I can honestly say I can do the 1-2 lift shift with no problem... But then again I have a 00' celica GTS 6-spd

how can you tell if ur in lift? what does the sound sound like? (dont say "it sounds loud" because our cars sound louder than most cars stock)

You feel it hit and the engine seems to go to the next level, you can tell. It would be hard not to.

it's redline is at 7800 but the fuel cut off starts at 7500
toyota bastards aren't doing anything about it either

i never have a problem staying in lift on 1st to 2nd just gotta be easy with it if you shift too hard tranny will go up soon i should know i've been through 2 of them

just for sound rference heres an old vid i took a while back on my auto gts on first gear lift i have I/E so the sound is way noticable past 6k
and yeah i cant stay in lift since the auto cuts off at 8k as you can see on the vid

yeah you need to be perfect on you shifts to do it

Hmmm.. interesting, in his 1-2 shifts lift shifts he stays above 6000 rpms, but when I do it my rpms stay up at 6700 rpms and the needle jumps for a split second to 7000 rpms then continues through 2nd gear lift into third...

ok i gotta speak for the 02 gts owners cz i got one.
the fuel cut off is at 7500rpm for sure. it might be just a little more than that, but when you see ur eyes the needle going on 7500rpm, you better shift cz you got no time after that. gts is my first manual car, and i find the shift from 1-2 the hardest of them all, and even more challenging for me cz i got an 02. the best 1-2 shift i did is i shifted on 7500rpm and landed on 5200rpm. im not the quickest shifter, especially not the best 1-2 shifter cz im always worried i hit the gate, but thats the best ive ever done. im sure i can improve my shifts to 5200rpm all the time at least. from 2-3 and 3-4 i shift at 7500rpm also and actually land on lift. i land exactly on lift.
the only solution to fix the 02 rev limiter is to buy an older model ecu, change the knock sensor. i bought the ecu for 120$ used that was a good deal. the knock sensor costs about 150$, and add 2-4 hours of labor on it. so regular price is gonna hit you like 500$. im gonna have this done by the end of this week, ill let you know how it works out.
and damn man, everytime i mess up shifting i feel like the shifter getting weird. like if i hit the gate while going on 2, inserting in 2nd gear kinda feels awkward for a while. is that common? and it seems like the more you drive it, that feelings going away

you can land lift with an 02 you just have to let something slip weather its your clutch or your tires but you can

The only way to land in lift on the 1-2 is to slip the clutch or spin the wheels. Slipping the clutch is much easier to do, and a lot less stressful on the engine/tranny.

Yeah, but I meant on every year. If you do a clean shift on any year except 02, you're gonna land at 5800, no matter how fast you shift. If you do a clean shift on 02, you'll land even lower.

wait you thought lift was exacly at 6100rpm? so that mean hitting it like about 8500 so it can drop at 6100? or is lift just staying above 6k?

NAA he doesn't know his shit. You don't need to slip the clutch at all to land lift from 1st to 2nd. Just make sure your gear change is very fast. I can easily land lift without bouncing off the limiter. You don't want to be hitting fuel cut off very often because its going to cause gearbox failure.

You don't have to slip the clutch but this method ensures you get lift everytime from 1st - 2nd.

Lift doesn't kick in until roughly 6300 RPM, stock.

Landing in lift stock is very difficult, but possible, and not exactly good for your car (like redlining it is )

I can keep it at 6k RPM on the 1-2 shift, but that still drops me out of lift for a brief second.

The 2-3 shift I can land in lift or VERY near it, and every shift after that is cake (aside from 6th, which has no lift ).

mine is just cutting off at 7500 cos it's terrible
and the tranny on these cars suck
so it makes it even harder to land lift...

Fast gear changes = worn synchros. You'll find out soon enough. You're probably slipping your tires if you can land at 6K or higher without consciously slipping the clutch. They don't always chirp. Plug in the GTS gear ratios and tire size into any calculator and you'll see that you can't land in lift on 1-2 on a clean shift.

Ok, not to be an Ass...but it is easier for an 2000 celica to land lift because the lift in 2000 started at 5950 rpms. After that year they all start at 6200rpms. HUGE difference. If you can't land lift WITHOUT slipping the clutch in a 2000...you suck.

i have a 2000, i shift at about 8200 first gear and land riight bak into lift, any gear after the 1-2 is much easier to land
