Puzzling, since I see about 1 per month around here. Maybe the 'long-term reliability' as defined includes those vehicles that remain unsold on the dealers lots, thus not breaking down and affecting the averages...?

^^^ maybe...what it is based on as far as I am to understnad it is problems reported to the dealer per 100 new cars...that is how things are tallied

JD power may have us at 83, but consumer reports testing has us under its best buy list for like 3 years now...including buying a used one

^^^ yup, consumer reports has nothing but praise for the celica. it gets almost the highest grade in about every catagory. and they had a celi on the cover. piss on jd power, we know whats up

And you know what brought down the reliability rating of the Celica, right? Those people who misshifted the car then had their mistake fixed for free under warranty. I remember the 00 Celica had lower marks on engine/tranny than the 01s, yet they were the exact same parts, except the late 00s and the 01s had stiffer shifter springs.

Yeah, Acura and Honda were smart by not covering RSX-S and S2K misshifts under warranty like Toyota did.

that's probably why toyota said "mother-fucker...we're losing a lot of money just claiming all these mis-shifts for people who can't drive...this is what we get for building a high revving engine...next time we'll make a car that has a camry engine in it..."...LOL

I know Consumer Reoprts prides itself on being completely independent and unbiased from the product manufacturers, accepting no advertising $$ to stay afloat.

who gives a shit...I love my car...and I builtit for long term reliability according to the way I drive...it will be fine (knocks on wood)...the only problem I've had with mine is the DAMN tranny...the celica tranny is the weak link in our cars...

there is no way a grand am should be higher than a celica my wife has a 2004 grand am gt and that thing is a piece of crap

Do you think that the reason why the celica is #83 is due to its problematic short throw shifter, and when people accidentally bang the shifter into the wrong gear slot because they're narrow?? I think that might be a source.

I would tend to believe J. D. Power is less of a reliable source of information compared to Consumer Reports, as in:

Yeah, but nowhere near as much as Toyota. Some guy is on his 5th GT engine under warranty. And Honda/Acura didn't change the shifter springs, then change the shifter pattern, then lower the rev limiter, all in hopes of keeping people from misshifting again (didn't work, either ).
