Celica Forums General Discussion General A New VVTL-i Engine

I wonder, now that Toyota can make VVTL-i engines, if they will make a bettr one that can fit in our cars. I found out during my research paper that the 7th Gen Celica is the first Toyota to use VVT-i of any kind due to Hondas patent on VTEC. But since its expired, Toyota can now use it for itself. Id love to think of a new VVTL-i engine for our cars that is better in every way.

VVT-i engine was offered in 2JZ-GTE in 1998, last year of Supra and in Lexus SC300's 2JZ-GE

That isnt possible. For one thing, Honda had the patent on Vtec that stoped toyota from developing any engine with same concept. The second thing is that the 1ZZ adn 2ZZ are teh first Toyota "smart" engines.

the VVT-i technology has been used in the Supra for some time now.

They should make one that will fit in the celica but will have 210Hp and 180ft/pounds of torque.
It should rev to 9000 and have torgue from 5000 on to red line and lift at 6000 that takes the power from like 170 to 210hp.
And It should wiegh that same or less then the current celica GTS engine.

VVTL-i is technologically superior to VTEC, unfortunately VTEC is just over praised by Honda fans, especially Type-R lovers. VVTL-i is very much if not exactly like i-VTEC, I also don't see why what kind of engine Honda puts out that other manufactors can not make some thing very much like it. Plus don't forget Yamaha designed the VVTL-i engine...

The GTS engine is great though, the only thing it could use is a bit more low end torque, I'd love to see our cars be able to pull 5.5 seconds on the 0-62mph mark, we can do 6.3's which is pretty impressive for a 1.8L 180bhp engine. And for the cost of a new engine I'd rather just mod the one I have for cheaper that would probably do equal or better performance than something new.

Not going to happen.
To produce that kind of power:
The engine would be way too heavy. It would be too big to fit in a celica engine bay. Reving to 9000 would wear the engine faster. The only way to get even remotely close would be to turbocharge your GT and tune it.

I doubt they will use VVTL-i again, for two reasons.

First, look at Honda. They developed i-Vtec for the RSX-S and didn't use it in any of their other high powered cars. Not even in the S2000. It's not really a technology that improves efficiency like variable valve timing, and there are probably cheaper ways to reach a given HP level.

Second, Toyota has never built a VVTL-i engine. The 2zz is basically built by Yamaha. I suppose it's possible, but I don't think Toyota is going to keep cranking out cars with engines that they cannot build themselves.

I hope to see it again in the future though.

Yeah I agree, Toyota has already given up on our cars and the MR2 so i dont see them giving us a new engine option
