I was driving today and looked in my rear-view and saw a 2003 miata coming up next to me fast. I drop it in third and floor it and he blows past me.

I was suprised at how much power it had. I mean I know he had a huge jump on me but I always thought of miatas as slow.

Anyone know much about them? Are they pretty fast.

(PS I caught him around 90mph. We were on a 40mph road)

Well, stock Miatas are slow. Mazda now makes the Mazdaspeed Miata, which has a factory turbo and is almost identical to the Celica in straight-line speed.

Also, there are MANY companies making dependable turbos and superchargers for the Miata. Unlike the Celica, it's not unusual at all to find someone with a FI Miata. They're probably one of the most popular auto-x cars in the world.

tell me about it.

I had an open freeway ramp, and I was sure there were no cars behind me. I turn on into the right lane of the onramp, and within seconds a Miata (with a real loud turbo) proceeds to blow my doors off.

definately lots of turbo'd miatas out there, and definitely not to be taken lightly.

rofl yup, for sure.

There was some guy with a turbo Miata at the Rev-It-Up event I raced in. He said it was dynoed at a touch under 300whp. He opened up the hood and I had to ask "so... there is a stock engine somewhere under all that stuff?" rofl

Miatas are also one of the best handling cars in terms of feel. Easily one of the most popular roadsters on a budget. Mazdaspeed Miata runs slalom slightly quicker than Celica. Who doesn't like RWD and a convertible top with a turbo??

i would like one, however; i would take a regular miata for a 1/4th of the price and turbo it for half the price of a mazdaspeed miata...but the MS Miata red color is quite badass...but yeah, convertible, turbo, 12s or quicker all day, turbo...must be nice

^^^ You'd be hard pressed to find a second gen Miata for under $10k used. Even then, most second gens are still 5-speeds, not 6 speeds like the MSM. I've thought about getting a new Miata and just installing the Flyin Miata turbo kit, but in the end it works out to like $28k and no warranty. spineyes

new miatas are incredible, i still think the only problem they have is the fact that they're girly convertables.

I was thinkin the same thing Calidrifter...psht, Miatas are good cars. Very healthy on the wallet, cheap RWD, fun all in one.
