how is that a wannabe cavalier?

I personally like it and I think it's about time that chevy got up off their asses and started trying to make some decent cars again.

so because cavaliers "suck", as you put it, that makes the cobalt a wannabe cavalier? does that mean a focus is a wannabe escort? or a gallardo a wannabe murcialago? or a murcialago a wannabe diablo? or a diablo a wannabe countach? (i'm more familiar with the progression of lambo's than with other cars, but you get my point.)

Let me just say this: When a chevy car is released, and it comes out with an SS badge, you can bet it'll be fast. Chevy isn't like other manufacturers who put on performance badging for looks alone, they are especially anal about the SS emblems. If it's badged as an SS, you can bet your ass that the car has a major performance boost beyond that of the other trim levels.

If it's badged as an SS from the factory, GM means buisness. You shouldn't feel embarrassed if you get your ass handed to you by an SS, it's a simple fact of life that it'll be a performance car. When GM adds that SS to a car, they are not screwing around. there's always a powerplant in the engine bay to back it up.

Look at some of the other cars GM made with an SS option available.

Chevelle SS
El Camino SS
Camaro SS (especially the last version)
Monte Carlo SS
Impala SS

All of these cars dominated and set performance trends that other manufacturers had to play catch-up to. The cobalt SS is just GM's way of saying "hello" to the performance compact segment. Note that the high-performance cavalier variant was called the Z24, and some models were actually pretty quick, but, although there were some fakes out there with decals and body kits sporting "SS" decals, chevy never actually made a cavalier SS. Cobalt SS will be the real deal for sure.

BTW, I think the cobalt SS looks better than the Scion TC, very similar body lines, but overall, I think the Cobalt looks better thumbsup

this seems like it shoulda been in gen discussion.

I wont make an opinion til I see what they can do at the track. at 2800 lbs and 200/200 it's about the same specs as a type s with a lil more torque. and I agree with rave about the SS. I think it will prolly hold its own. I wouldnt personally buy one but theres no real reason why yet lol.

The Cobalt, IMO, looks very similiar to the Cavi, as it should since it is the replacement for it. spineyes I also agree with Rave about the SS badge on GMC. The closest Cavi came to a SS was a RS. I owned a 94 RS, V6, 5 speed manual. The bitch wasn't slow!! I'll never go back to chevy though after owning a Toyota. I don't care what kind of HP it puts out. thumbsup It'll never be as reliable. grin rice

Since we are all gonna want to drag race (challenge) the Cobalt SS at a streetlight, it will hand our asses to us with 200HP and 200ft/lbs of torque. It's just that simple. Sure the celica's are great in corners, but when's the chance that you'll see a cobalt on a track other than a dragstrip?

Just be realistic about it people...

I thought the #'s on the Cobalt weren't that great. Hmm.. IMO any engine that is F/I and is only 200bhp is weak sauce. I mean hell, Celica is 180bhp and N/A... Cobalt is pathetic. thumbsdown

I don't have any problems with Chevy's reliability OR their performance vehicles. I have owned many good chevys, including 2 cavaliers (my wifes) That were VERY reliable both for 150,000+ miles. However, I think their styling has gone to hell. ALL their vehicles, including trucks, suvs, etc...EXCEPT the vette are butt-fugly. Thats why I wouldn't buy one.

i had a cavalier before my celica, i beat the hell out of it, and it started up every morning whether it wanted to or not. I bought it when i was 16 at 55,000 miles and traded it last year with 136,000miles, no problems, except a fuel pump and a battery. My celica on the other hand, is nicer, faster, or isnt slow is the way to say it, and costs me a hell of a lot more. But the celica has spend at least 1/10th of my ownership in the shop. I know that toyota is a reliable car, but what happened to me? I must have got a lemon. Anyway, i dont think the cobalt will be junk, but for 22 grand, i think i could find something much better...

there have been plenty of ppl w/ celica's who have had plenty of problems with their cars. It all breaks down to the ppl who own them, if you treat your car like shit it will treat you to shit in return.

It really bugs me how ppl bash American cars cause of their reliability, but more often then not its due to the retards that own them and the lack of regular service provided for them

well, i treated my cavy very well, synthetic iol every 3000, coolant check, tires rotated--trust me i couldnt have helped that car any more than i did -just face it american companys cant compete with the quality put into the japanese cars-but thats my opinion so dont worry about knockin me for it because its not gonna change my mind

im not knockin you its just when something it mass produced theres bound to be some problems. maybe you just got a lemon, who knows, but ive see just as many problems with jap cas as ive seen with american cars. and lets face it, the more ppl who buy cars made overseas the worse the american econ. gets.

there's already a thread about this in the racing forum (which is where this thread should be posted as well).

the cobalt will be about equal with the gts (manual versions). the cobalt boats more power but is heavier and is a 5-spd, which equals it out. i would like to race one tell you the truth

I dunno I was just on the Chevy Website. I think they might have under rated the engine like dodge did on the SRT-4. Looks like it has weak HP...but I swear to God it says it peaks at 271 torque. I am probably just reading it wrong. Someone else check to see if I am tarded.

Ok, here is a link to some timeslips from a Ion Redline (same engine as cobalt ss) I believe that they are almost the same weight too. The forum where I found this kept on saying that this is the fastest slip so far. We are going to be very close in the 1/4 at the track. thumbsup

regardless, they can't have much done to it, and look at those bad 60' times compared to what the good Celica drivers pull. When they figure out how to launch FWD from coming here maybe, they will do a bit better.

thoughts:
those who want to go turbo will probably get the 2.2.

con:
in stock form, I'm not impressed by a 2.0 supercharged car that only puts out those numbers. (But then again look at the meager similar results of supercharging the Celica GTS 1.8, though the GTS will still be 300 lbs less).

pro:
it's probably a heck of a lot easier to drive than land a GTS in lift.

PROS: yes the NHRA Sport Compact Pro FWD and Hot Rod classes are currently dominated by 2.0 L and 2.2 L Ecotec cars. Nelson Hoyos, Marty Ladwig, Lisa Kubo.

I get my kicks on EC.

hopefully more parts will come out for our cars like internals cams, mainly that will give us the gain like swapping out honda cams gives them a great gain and i think after that most of our parts will be covered im not sure about the intake manifold though does someone make that yet

Supposed to be stock. However, as QTRMLR_1 said, not very impressive driving skills. Still, that is faster than a stock celica.

Ah I'm not impressed! It looks similiar on paper power to weight as the RSX Type S. If its a the replacement for the Cav does it still have rear drums? Ha! I run the Type S and I will run the Nobalt!

I'm out!

No, I am not saying that at all. I think with minor mods we can take it. However the same thing goes for the cobalt. Only time will tell how good the aftermarket will be for that car.

i'm sure it will be great for the cobalt that ecotec motor has about as many options as the civics do and toyota doesnt wanna play the horepower game and gm has something to prove so they are gonna try very hard turbo is our only chance since they are supercharged and that is not as powerful as a turbo can be
