Ive got an 02 celica GTS 6 spd, I bought a 2000 ECM to up my rev limiter from 7500 to 8400rpm...
The directions specified on newcelica.org to replace the knock sensor.

My question is, why do I need to replace the knock sensor as well as the ECM. confused

Can anyone give me an answer as to its function.

thanks

These sensors, which utilize the characteristics of piezoelectric ceramics to detect engine knock, excel in heat resistance and durability. They are available in two types : resonant and non-resonant

My thoery to whay you have to replace the knock sensor is that the original that came in your 02 is only made to detect revs up to 7500 rpm and may count revs above that as a knock since it worked with the old ECU, replacing it with a 2000 knock sensor would better suit you becuase it may detect revs up to 8400 and count that as normal which it should.

I know it has been two days since you first posted but please don't think this site is useless, this was a very technical question and not many would know this, this site is great has has proven very useful and very informational in my experience

Yes you do have to replace it. If the instructions say replace it, then replace it!
